Stanley Kubrick created images in 2001: A Space Odyssey that reflected mankind's vision and ability to progress, although these dreams have not yet been realized ,we will surely not abandon them.

The great day is here, malchicks and devotchkas, the great Day, the Jubilee, a truly Holy Year. I could make a pretty good case for a new Gospel based upon the life of our poor wretch; but I will not. Predicated on the conviction that a certain man escaped from DEATH and a cave and a magic escape sack 1970 years ago, more than one billion souls believe the Man is Here, not a ghost in the Machine, but the Living Heart of Spirit, GodHead as we "understand" the Term. His birth 2006 or 2007 years ago causes celebrations around the globe yearly on the 25th day of "December", the winter solstice. So much our Pal and Master, Joshua of Nazareth. Our Stanley, but a man, but a son of Jacob and Gertrude of Manhattan and the Bronx, on the Atlantic seacoast of this New World, was not granted any superhuman talents or powers, being but a "boy" and then a "man" -no warrior or bomb maker or exponent of "clean" living - yet 20000000001 years from now, I should like to think his Memory, his Artistry, his Life shall be remembered by our unimaginable descendants in such a fashion as to mind meld his name with our leading Avatars...that we shall honor entire star systems with his Beloved Name. He was the best of us, the Mind Unfettered, seeking truth. Yeah, yeah, the question was answered, if not to the satisfaction of the procurator of Judea, but still I tell you all, the Truth is still out there, beyond the stars, and Stanley Kubrick walked the walk and talked the talk in search of it. When we walk out there, we'll take him with us.

The ape throws up that bone and it turns into a spaceship, and everything that takes place between those two moments - the evolution of man, civilization, science, hell everyone you ever knew of, met, talked to, thought about, - none of that was relevant. The story had to jump past your entire life to continue. I never felt so insignificant watching a movie. I love that. I'll miss ya, Stan.

You, who are now gone, will always be remembered. Not only in our hearts but most importantly in our minds for showing us something we never thought possible in the cinema. You are my guide, my mentor, and my idol as I attempt my mark as a filmmaker. Thank you, Mr. Kubrick.

I want to thank Stanley Kubrick for his movies, especially The Shining and 2001. He gave class and emotions to all of us, and pure art. Thanks for opening our eyes wide shut.

Stanley Kubrick was one of the greatest directors there ever was. His films were so beautifully made, they all capture a feeling of amazement in each of them. My favorites are A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. I will always love his films. Thank you Mr. Kubrick for encouraging me into following your wisdom.

Quotation from KUBRICK'S 2001: A TRIPLE ALLEGORY, by Leonard F. Wheat:
"Stanley Kubrick's 2001 is, in my judgment, the grandest motion picture ever filmed. The challenge of smashing the ambiguity, wiggling through the symbolism, and solving the puzzle is part of what makes watching, and later contemplating, 2001 such a satisfying experience. By augmenting the film's other virtues with three simultaneously revealed allegories, Kubrick has done more than weave an intricate masterpiece. He has transformed himself into cinema's over man.

I first saw Stanley Kubrick's legendary science fiction movie 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY when it aired on local TV out here in Los Angeles in 1983. It impressed me a great deal, and it kept doing so on reviewings. Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke created what must be seen now as THE science fiction film to end all science fiction films. Its influence is clear on a lot of films, just as Kubrick influenced other filmmakers. His death in 1999 was such an enormous shock, and he will be missed. But we will always have the artistry and integrity of his films, which were all great experiences

Stanley Kubrick has been an inspiration for me not only as a filmmaker, but as an artist. Although many friends that I have find him to be too boring or lazy, I have found him to be methodic and very caring in his work. Guys like Kubrick, in my opinion, come once in a lifetime. Thanks Stanley for showing us a good time and sharing your vision with us. You are loved and will be missed.
Anonymous: 12/14/00
The always a little "off" and ceaselessly captivating lens of Stanley Kubrick is forever ingrained to be an inspiration, not so much an inspiration to copy it, but to take its ideas of breaking the mold and seeing things differently. He was an artist of true, true vision, and surely like energy that never really dies. He is an artist.

I think that Stanley Kubrick was the best film director of all time. He was just brilliant, I've never seen another movie like The Shining or A Clockwork Orange. Everything in his movies, the characters, the music, the color..... he was a genius. I miss you master Kubrick, you are the best of all.
Eric Wilson: 11/30/00
I have been an admirer and fan of Mr. Kubrick's ever since I saw 2001 in 1990. He has truly inspired me with his brilliance and his visions. He was the consummate professional and no doubt the greatest filmmaker I have ever had the pleasure of studying. I thank you for providing a tribute page as it is clear he has earned it. He gave all of us such a gift by making such priceless movies. Stanley, you will be dearly missed. Thank you.

It's been more than a year and I just don't know how to accept this. Geniuses are immortal, but even the immortals die. It's hard to believe that there won't be another of his outstanding movies, that he's gone. But his legacy will always be there, as well as his thoughts and his knowledge. Rest in peace.
Andrew Filice: 11/26/00
I'm only 13 years old, and watching Kubrick's style of filming of how he pulls you into the plot, this brings me into a trance. I still haven't seen all of his critically acclaimed films, but what I did see (Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove , The Shining, and 2001: A Space Odyssey) were the greatest of all the films I have ever seen. I am very surprised that the Academy didn't nominate some of his most brilliant films. As much as he made an impact upon history, I still think he does with every growing person who watches and watched or is going to watch his films. Life changing movies can never be forgotten. Rest in peace.
Justin Rielly: 11/19/00
Stanley Kubrick was the greatest director of his time. Each film that he has done has left a significant impact in film history. Eyes Wide Shut should have been nominated for an Oscar, and it wasn't! It comes to you that the Oscar committee didn't care enough about Stanley's work. Directors like Spielberg, Coppola and Scorsese have taken notes from just watching this great man's movies. Stanley Kubrick is the greatest director who ever lived, and there will never be another Stanley Kubrick! R.I.P. STANLEY KUBRICK 1928-1999
Ben Seeger: 11/14/00
Some may say that his films are cold and impersonal, but they are wrong. Every film that he makes seems to be a labor of love. They range from the sadistic (Clockwork Orange), the hilarious (Dr. Stranglove), and the enigmatic but beautiful (2001 and Eyes Wide Shut). His films can be said to be the greatest of their genres. He was not only the greatest director, but also the most versatile. Every film was different but the same. Unlike Scorcese or Coppola, nobody has been able to rip off his style. That is proof enough that he is the greatest there has ever been or ever will be.
Terry Garrett Elder: 11/11/00
Never has there been, nor will there ever be again, a man with the technical capability, artistic depth, and intellectual supremacy that Kubrick possessed. His films speak with a volume unsurpassed by any, each having such a distinct emotional ideology and superior guidelines for their direction, that they inspire, shock and inspire, even those who are not capable of realizing this. They are the anti-films and works of art many are afraid to embrace. Only Kubrick-ian films can do this. Forever remember his art and his beauty. It will not surface again for a long time... In loving memory (You have changed me in ways I cannot begin to know).

What can I say that hasn't been said? He has inspired this aspiring filmmaker. Namely, 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is a beautiful space ballet. In my humble opinion, it is the kind of movie that every filmmaker aspires to make, but can never quite get it. Kubrick got it. I only hope I can do work he'd appreciate.

Stanley Kubrick has inspired me into the world of movie production. I have already made 4 movies, 2 dedicated to him. He has to be one of the best directors out there, if only he was around to keep providing us with entertainment.
Robert Allen Beatty: 10/27/00
Comfort Unbeknownst! Withering in sadness! What thoughts could have plagued Kubrick's mind? To capture torment and desire in the most trivial perspectives ever witnessed on VHS or DVD. From Dr. Strangelove to Eyes Wide Shut... You knew something Stanley Kubrick! Thank you for sharing it with us. Forever entwined in your greatness, Robert Allen Beatty.

A brilliant artist, of the highest caliber. His body of work will forever be a testament to what a true genius is capable of. He was the last of a rapidly disappearing breed, the giants of filmmaking. Shame on the Academy for not rewarding his triumphs. A legend in his own time, and for all time. I feel very lucky to have even been alive during the last 23 years of his life. He is my hero, my inspiration, he's my boy. I love you Mr. Kubrick.

The first scene I saw in a Kubrick movie scared me shitless. Alex from "A Clockwork Orange", peering out over his glass of milk. I watched the rest of the movie, leaving me breathless. Ever since, Kubrick has been my god.

Kubrick was a visual genius, and a master of mood. Delving into our deeper recesses, the place of which many directors do not dare to go, Kubrick showed us the horror of inhumanity; the angers we all have experienced; the fears that we have kept hidden and our own; and the monsters that we can become if we repress them. Kubrick was, or rather IS, THE vanguard of the cinema, possibly for all time.

Stanley Kubrick has become to me, a mentor in my future goal as a successful filmmaker. I have constructed a world for myself that only allows things of sheer brilliance to live within it. Stanley and his genius, fills a large space within my world. He is without a doubt one of the most creative, original, and artistic people to have ever lived. I only wish I could have met and worked with him. Mr. Kubrick has become my father in film.

Stanley Kubrick, a man the world misunderstood, but who most certainly understood the world. We will only be so lucky if his brilliance and insight will be reproduced during our lifetimes.

Stanley Kubrick to me was a man of pure genius and inspiration. He still remains a driving force behind my education and my love for the arts. Thank you Mr. Kubrick. God is lucky to have you.

There are movies and there are films and then there is Kubrick. Watching the man's work is never a passive experience and while often enormously entertaining, there is always that extra level of intellect and mystique that aims at the head rather than the heart. There are very few filmmakers who stand out from the herd - Bresson, Mizoguichi, maybe Lynch and Cronenberg, and certainly Kubrick. A new Kubrick film was an event: a two hour queue for the opening of 'Eyes Wide Shut', a haunted, stunned silence upon first seeing the trailer for 'Full Metal Jacket', the endless, endless debates and deconstructions of 'A Clockwork Orange', the sheer weight of the significance of '2001', the buzz around town when 'Killers Kiss' is in revival at the university - surely we have not even begun to delve into the depths of this body of work. We have glanced at shimmers of light across an ocean surface, now we must dive fathoms deep and begin exploring.

I am a huge fan of Stan Kubrick. He is one of the greatest directors ever! He is a technical and visual master, and his films have deeply touched my soul. I was almost driven to tears by all the humanity in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr Strangelove was so deep I had to watch it twice to appreciate it! I was short of breath by the shots in A Clockwork Orange, the brilliant drama in Barry Lyndon, the brilliant dream-like tracking shots in The Shining scared the shit out of me, the brilliantly brutal and realistic boot camp footage in Full Metal Jacket made my heart stop. He is a cinematic master, and will always be in my memory, he is one of my greatest inspirations and I am very sad to see he has passed on, but he has touched my soul and is still living in my mind.

My first encounter with Stanley was "A Clockwork Orange". I had never before had such a feeling at the close of a movie, and haven't since. Seeing other Kubricks became an obsession. I recently saw "Eyes Wide Shut", and have to say Stanley is still one of the finest directors who has ever graced our movie screens. He will be missed. Thank you Stanley, for affecting my life in so many ways.
J. Knox - Director, Independent Film: 09/05/00
I first heard about Stanley about 3 years ago. I was with some close friends and we had been talking about a movie called "A Clockwork Orange". We rented it and I was blown away by the spectacular dialog and camera shots. Soon after that I began studying His movies and after I had seen all of his movies, I began learning the craft that Stanley revolutionized. I thank You Stanley, and I wish I could have met you, my mentor, I will miss you.

"He copied no one while all of us were scrambling to imitate him."- Director Steven Spielberg. I cannot more than agree. Stanley Kubrick was an artist. He was one of a kind. Goodbye Sir!
Anonymous: 09/02/00
I think Stanley Kubrick was a genius and therefore he was misunderstood. My personal favorite is "A Clockwork orange" which is banned in most universities in the US; although it's a film whose whole point is to show you the amount of violence in modern society. "Lolita" was misunderstood too, and critics called him "A psychosexual maniac". Above all, technically he was a master of cinematography.
Thomas Horne: 08/26/00
It doesn't matter how many brilliant filmmakers appear and give us their wonderful gifts. There are things that Kubrick did that no one, I believe, will ever match. The stunning tracking shots, the eerie presence of the camera, haunting the characters with its omnipotence. His are dream worlds of the psyche, and Eyes Wide Shut is a fitting end to his unmatched career. I am deeply saddened that he has passed on, but I have realized that there will always be more of him; his films unfold and deepen with each viewing, and his influence on filmmaking will not fade away. Thank you Stanley from my heart.
Christopher: 08/25/00
He might have utilized a slightly higher percentage of his brain than most. I consider every time I've watched one of his films an event in my life. Thank you very much.

I have only known Stanley Kubrick's work for around 3 years now, but I have to say, I am totally amazed at how this man can make such fantastic movies. Clockwork Orange is a marvel, and is a sign of how Hollywood makes trash. I believe that if Kubrick was still with us, the movie world would be a better place.

To me, Stanley Kubrick was the best, the quintessential director in film history. He has left behind a legacy that no one will ever be able to live up to. His films can't rank on the AFI's top 100 because they cannot be compared with other films in the system. There are not many directors, a special few, that come close to being the greatest. Scorsese and Kubrick have one thing in common: they are the two greatest directors to have ever lived and have never won the coveted Academy Award for directing. A sad shame it is that someone so great had to miss out on that opportunity. It is a pledge to the AMPAS that Scorsese not be slighted the way Kubrick was. Stanley's legacy will live on forever in everyone's films, but Stanley's films, will live longer.
Anonymous: 08/11/00
The movie Clockwork Orange was pure poetry, its going to be hard to live knowing that he will never create another masterpiece like 2001.

When I first stepped into a theatre to watch one of Stanley's films I was just a kid. I was 13 and the film was FULL METAL JACKET ... and those were the days of Rambo (!) for me and my friends. That was kind of a baptism of fire for me, the beginning of a great adventure that still goes on. More than one year has passed since I heard of your death, but the magic world you started in my eyes and mind is still alive. I'm sure it will always be, unlike you and me. That's why I love you. Ti amo Stan!

For Stanley Kubrick, thank you for Paths Of Glory, the Killing, Lolita, Doctor Strangelove--all your films in black and white; Eyes Wide Shut is a masterpiece; never mind scary, The Shining is the craziest movie of all time; 2001 and Clockwork are mystifying--and those are just the titles. You will be missed, but your mystique will live on. If I can get my foot in the door out in Hollywood, watch out. The angles you use, the music you use, the stories you present--one of a kind, man. See you in the next world.

In an era of rampant commercialism, style over substance, and the virtual extinction of artistic integrity, the loss of Stanley Kubrick is unfathomable. He was a sorely needed and important member of the film community specifically and the art world in general. Few (if any) were so adept at challenging the perceptions of the public, and none were as knowledgeable, intelligent, and supplied with such clarity of vision and purpose as Stanley Kubrick.
Katherine: 08/02/00
Stanley Kubrick made my day when I saw 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Dr. Strangelove. My favorite line will always be Alex saying, this would sharpen you up for that bit of ultra-violence. God bless you Stan the Man.

I think that Stan's films contributed a lot to the opinions, limits, and realism in film making. I don't really think that people really dug as deep as he did...or exposed the raw truth without glitz and glamour. Hats off to him for his life, death, and immortality. He will never be so easily forgotten!
Michael Malkmus: 07/25/00
One such as Stanley does not die. To truly live forever, you must touch another's soul. Stanley has done that.
