Strike Back below!
by: James Thoo Feb. 5, 2008

Captain Generic strikes again! Apparently there was a little concern over the similarity between the title of this flick, and the Zack Snyder film WATCHMEN. And so, well... THE NIGHT WATCHMAN has apparently now been retitled STREET KINGS, thus ending a lot of my interest in it. Seriously, this is a horrible, horrible name for a film. This would be a horrible name for a horrible video game about about rogue skate boarders, but for a noir-ish dirty cop flick written by people like James Ellroy and David Ayer? You couldn't do any better than STREET KINGS? I don't know how the hell this happened, and I don't know how they could possibly be involved, but I'm inclined to blame that bunch of Patriots players who couldn't bring down Eli Manning before he hoisted the ball towards Tyree. THE NIGHT WATCHMAN/STREET KINGS is about an LA cop (Keanu Reeves) whose wife dies and then is framed for murder by those close to him. After this he embarks on a mission to clear his name and once again, become king of the street. Yeah, see, that just sounds stupid. Maybe the guys who framed him are the street kings? Oh, whatever. The film also stars Chris Evans, Hugh Laurie, Common and Forest Whitaker.

really? you think it's that bad?
first of all, everything i've heard of this movie makes it sound pretty good, potentially. in fact, the only thing i didn't like was the previous title, because it was so close to zac snyder's WATCHMEN and also the russian visual extravaganza NIGHT WATCH and the previously mentioned keanu reeves vehicle THE WATCHER and some generic film a few years back also called NIGHT WATCH. so, if you ask m...

STREET KINGS? not bad, but definitely generic. it does however remind me of SUICIDE KINGS which was really good. i'll grant your premise of sounding like a generic skateboarding flick, but in relation, it's much better that it's previous title.

David Ayer's title style
Training Day - Harsh Times - Street Kings

BTW, early word after a test screening last week is that the movie is pretty kick ass.

James --Zach Snyder's film (like Alan Moore's book) is called Watchmen, no "the".

As for "Street Kings", it's still better than Night Watchman, which sounds similar to Keanu's 2000 bomb "The Watcher". The guy must be keen to put some distance between the two...

How about?
Is everyone forgetting that this is a Keanu Reeves movie. Isn't that reason enough to be upset about this flick.
You could replace him with a cigar store Indian and the performance would be less wooden.

What's so bad about Street Kings?

Not particularly memorable, but I don't think there's anything particularly lame about it. At least saying it out loud doesn't make you feel like you're trying to stuff an alarm clock down your throat like "Quantum of Solace" does.

Yo James, chill mang
I actually thought "The Night Watchmen" was a horrible name for a movie. At least "Street Kings" has some umph behind it. IF they market it well enough, "Street Kings" could work out nicely. There are WAAAYYYY more movies out there to complain about their names than this one. (i.e. "Jumper")
