Studios ramp up pics Oct. 8, 2008
Source: Variety
by: Mike Sampson

The major studios had been laying low for a little while in the midst of the SAG strike but now they're ramping up production for early-to-mid 2009 for some pretty big projects. Variety has a pretty decent lineup of what major projects the studios are lining up to begin filming in the next 12 months. The list includes some no-brainers - IRON MAN 2, AVATAR, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE GREEN HORNET and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - but also includes some surprises. On the list are some projects like SEX AND THE CITY 2, A-TEAM, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (remake), GEARS OF WAR and BIOSHOCK. We also get some directing news like Robert Zemeckis officially on the mo-cap kids flick MARS NEEDS MOMS, Wesley Strick directing the ELM STREET remake and that Zack Snyder will make SUCKERPUNCH his post-WATCHMEN directing projects. Other projects of interest that are underway include THE SORCEROR'S APPRENTICE, ROBOCOP, THOR, BEVERLY HILLS COP, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD and CLASH OF THE TITANS. Sounds like a lot of fancy pants projects on the way which could give us a 2010 chock full of awesome shit. Or total crap...(I'm talking to you BEVERLY HILLS COP 4).

Extra Tidbit: There was no LETHAL WEAPON 5 on this list.

Voltron's not on that list... (sigh)

Hmm... everyone complains about remakes and sqequels yet when a mainstream director actually tries something original, say Tarantino with Grindhouse or Shamylan with The Happening, all of the fans just complain even more and say "they should get back to their roots."

Yes, both movies were flawed but at least they were original concepts, and a lot of the same people on here who claim to want original movies just complained about those films too.

THE IRONMAN PIC
Off topic, but is that picture above from the movie? or is it from a comic book? I can't recall iron man ever having such a huge rip in his suit (the right shoulder to be exact in that photo).

Robocop is supposed to be a complete remake, again Peter Weller is too old to have an active role in my opinion, but they need his voice.

FIRECAPTAIN 4 pretty much said what I was intending to say in regards to remakes. But I'd like to add X-MEN 3 to his list of necessary remakes. Now is the Aronofsky directed ROBOCOP a remake or a sequel? I think I heard somewhere it was the latter but I could be wrong.

I SICK AND TIRED
... of remakes. I know people complain about this all the time, but I'm serious. I'm fucking tired of this shit. Sure, some movies could use the remake treatment (I'm looking at you "Spawn", "Watchers", "Phantoms", etc.), but stuff like "Black Christmas", "The Fog", "Halloween", "The Hitcher", etc? Fuck no. Studios should have left that shit alone. Either remake something that can actually be improved upon or get REALLY talented people behind the project, or just don't do anything at all.

"Robocop" may turn out to be decent (Aronofsky's involvement cheers me up), but I still have my doubts.

Sequels I can deal with (most of the time), but just straight up remaking something (most of the time shot-for-shot), is annoying, shitty, cheap, and unimaginative. Thank you, Hollywood, for having no balls.

They are rushing everything so they dont get caught up in a SAG strike...

Because of that, I bet half the shit in that list will end up sucking due to rushing them out as soon as they can. Im not worried about Thor, Green Hornet or Iron Man 2, but the rest? possibly.
