2001: A Space Odyssey’s 70mm re-release gets a breathtaking trailer

In 1968 a movie called 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY forever changed the landscape of cinema forever. Director Stanley Kubrick brought his vision to life with groundbreaking visual effects and complex storytelling, giving us a sci-fi masterpiece that continues to influence filmmakers to this day. The movie celebrates its 50th birthday this year, and to celebrate a 70mm unrestored version of the movie will be making the rounds in theaters, and you can watch the first magnificent trailer for it right now.

The unrestored version of the movie will make its debut at Cannes on May 12 before hitting theaters a week later. Christopher Nolan, who worked closely with the studio during the mastering process, will present the movie at Cannes. Nolan has often cited the movie as one of his all-time favorite films, with critics and audiences drawing notable comparisons between it and his own movie INTERSTELLAR.

For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. The original version will be presented to recreate the cinematic event that audiences experienced 50 years ago.

Much like the movie itself the trailer is breathtaking. Containing some of the most breathtaking imagery in movie history, this is an event that demands to be seen on the big screen. Any movie fan out there who gets a chance to see the movie in 70mm owe it to themselves to do so because to see it in this format is to see it how it was originally intended.
