While it may have been easy to dismiss THE PYRAMID as yet another found footage horror movie, I’m finding myself intrigued by the notion that the movie seems to have a lot more to offer. The movie comes from first time director Grégory Levasseur, the guy who wrote HIGH TENSION and the underrated 2006 remake of THE HILLS HAVE EYES. The featurette we have today puts THE PYRAMID’s producer Alexandre Aja (who directed those scripts) in the hot seat.
First up the synopsis, enter if you dare:
A team of U.S. archaeologists unearths an ancient pyramid buried deep beneath the Egyptian desert. As they search the pyramid's depths, they become hopelessly lost in its dark and endless catacombs. Searching for a way out, they become desperate to seek daylight again. They come to realize they aren't just trapped, they are being hunted.
Aja sounds very passionate about offering up something new and surprising, like a good horror movie should. If this movie takes the substance over style path that it looks to be doing, I’m all in. The first trailer did a great job at setting up our fear; a cold dark place where someone or something is stalking you. That sounds like a lot of fun to me; I can’t remember a horror movie taking place in a setting like this before.
THE PYRAMID creeps into theaters on December 5th 2014.
