Our Favorite Movie Easter Eggs: Rango, Big Hero 6, Pulp Fiction and more!

movie easter eggs

These days, part of the fun of watching a movie in theaters or at home with the ability to freeze frames, is finding the Easter eggs hidden within. For the history buffs out there, the origin of the cinematic Easter egg dates back to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Supposedly one day on the set, the cast decided to have a traditional Easter egg hunt, as you do, but some of the eggs were never found and actually appeared in frames of the movie! So if you're obsessed with finding hidden messages, jokes, and ways to make you look smart in front of your friends, check out these Easter eggs!

Understandably some of these have been around for a while, but some may be new to other readers; there’s no expiration date on sharing so enjoy and have fun!

PULP FICTION – The future of Fox Force Five

Pulp Fiction is one of those movies I watch a few times a year and it never gets old. It’s iconic and nearly every scene is memorable for displaying everything we adore about Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking. I will admit though that I never caught this Easter egg until recently and then of course found that it wasn’t anything new according to the Internet. But that’s ok, it’s awesome.

It takes place during the Jack Rabbits Slim restaurant scene where Mia (Uma Thurman) tells Vincent Vega (John Travolta) about a failed TV pilot she was part of, Fox Force Five, which included five very different women with special talents that are similar to the talents of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad in KILL BILL.

TOY STORY – Buzz, the tool man

We all know that Pixar loves inside jokes and Easter eggs; there are even a few pop culture references in their work too. Like this little nice one from TOY STORY, notice the name of the toolbox in Sid’s room. If you watched TV in the 90s, you know about Home Improvement starring Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear. In the show, Binford Tools is a hardware and power tool company mentioned in nearly every episode.

RANGO – Too weird to live, too rare to die!

Gore Verbinski’s RANGO is a great film starring Johnny Depp; I would classify it as a computer-animated action comedy western, a genre for everyone! At the beginning of the film, Rango (Depp) becomes stranded in the Mojave Desert and manages to hit the windshield of a familiar red convertible.

If you remember the other movie Depp was in where drives a red convertible across the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, then seeing Duke and Gonzo makes a lot of sense here.

BIG HERO 6 – Frozen in time

Disney's FROZEN is the top-grossing animated movie of all time; so needless to say, it has a long lifespan ahead of it. Disney has already planted some notable Easter eggs in their other work, last year’s BIG HERO 6 for example. They came quick so if you blinked, you likely missed them. The most obvious one, as seen above, is a stone statue of evil Prince Hans; you get to watch as Baymax turns him to rubble with a flying fist.

The other two I would never have seen without Disney revealing the eggs in the special features of BH6. During Hiro and Baymax’s flight over San Fransokyo, you can spot Olaf, in the form of a statue it looks like, on the streets of the futuristic city. 3

You might be wondering how all these Eggs arrived in San Fransokyo, well in the harbor you will find the ship from Frozen with its sails down that likely brought them over from Arendelle.
