Hanks & Streep take on the government in first The Post trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The holiday season is so much more magical when Steven Spielberg is involved, and this year his gift to us is the Tom Hanks/Meryl Streep drama THE POST. We got our first look at the cast a few days ago, and like Paul Revere is meant a trailer was coming, and now you can watch the Spielbergian greatness above. The movie focuses on the true story of Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) and the paper's first female publisher, Kay Graham (Streep) as they race against the New York Times to publish the Pentagon Papers, which detailed a massive government cover-up. This race leads them to the Supreme Court, where they take on the government to fight for the right of the freedom of the press. Kick their ass, Hanks and Streep!

Spielberg is the master because he does both intimate dramas and crowd-pleasing spectacle films so well. Movies like LINCOLN are just as enthralling as RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and THE POST looks like it will live up to those standards.  Hanks and Streep (surely Streep) will get nominated for some awards this year, while Spielberg's name is likely to enter the fray as well. All three are some of the best the industry has ever seen, and they're tackling a profound and relevant story involving the fight to preserve the First Amendment. Yep, better start turning in your jewelry so they can melt it down into gold.

THE POST also stars  Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford and Zach Woods and is out December 22 and in theaters everywhere January 12.
