A reboot of Child’s Play is in the works from the producers of It

Although many of Chucky's horror franchise brethren have a remake and/or reboot under their belts, the CHILD'S PLAY series has managed to escape that particular trend, until now. MGM is fast-tracking a reboot of the classic 80s horror film which centered on a toy doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer. POLAROID director Lars Klevberg is set to helm the film from a script by Tyler Burton Smith (KUNG FURY 2) with David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith (IT) serving as producers. Production is expected to kick off in Vancouver this September.

Now, that's pretty much all that is known about the CHILD'S PLAY reboot, but Collider does have a few more tidbits which could be of interest. They've learned that it will be a contemporary reboot involving a group of kids (think Stranger Things) who stumble across a "technologically-advanced doll." There's also no word on whether Brad Dourif will still supply the voice of Chucky, or whatever this new doll will be called, but as this is a reboot, it would be a good opportunity to recast. However, the original CHILD'S PLAY franchise will still exist as Don Mancini, who has written every installment of the series in addition to directing the last three, is developing a CHILD'S PLAY TV series which will be a continuation of the story which has been developing over the course of seven movies. Don Mancini said that the tone will be more "dark and disturbing" than previous entries, adding, "We want to definitely signal that we are going dark, darker than ever before. It’s going to be very creepy." Also returning for the TV series will be Brad Dourif, who will lend his distinctive cackle to the voice of Chucky once again. The show is being envisioned as an hour-long series consisting of eight episodes, which will provide quite the opportunity for lots of bloody Chucky-related mayhem.

What do you folks think of CHILD'S PLAY getting the reboot treatment?
