Phase 4 of the MCU will be drastically different than Phase 3

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

In addition to bringing together just about ever hero that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to offer, the upcoming AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will serve as the conclusion to the past decade of Marvel movies. Quite the tall order, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo seem more than up to it. However, INFINITY WAR won't serve as the end of Marvel's Phase 3, as we still have ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, CAPTAIN MARVEL, and the mysteriously untitled AVENGERS 4 to go before we launch into that fourth phase. While speaking with Yahoo Movies UK, the Russo brothers teased that the next phase will be drastically different as it introduces a new slate of characters and films.

Anthony Russo told Yahoo that the differences between Phase 3 and Phase 4 will be "pretty drastic," with Joe Russo adding, "I think massively different. I think that this is if Marvel has been writing a book for ten years, it’s the end of the book and someone is going to write a new book. Who knows what that new book will be but this is an ending and that’ll be a new beginning." Our possible first taste of that next phase remains untitled for spoiler reasons, but Joe Russo said that it's "going to be quite a long while" before people learn the title of AVENGERS 4, squishing hopes that the reveal would come at the conclusion of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. "We need people to see this movie, digest this movie," Joe added, "and then we can tell them what the next story is they’re going to see."

Despite being announced as AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART TWO, the title of AVENGERS 4 was changed once Joe and Anthony Russo realized how different the two films were going to be. "It’s serialised storytelling without question so there is going to be a correlation, narratively, but we really wanted to make two distinct movies," Anthony said. "We weren’t interested in making one long film and getting out the scissors and cutting the scissors and cutting it in half." Joe added, "We don’t find that a satisfying cinematic experience so this is a complete story, that’s a complete story, and they’re very different movies."

The official synopsis for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR:
