Last Updated on August 5, 2021

We've got some great news for all of you animation enthusiasts out there! This afternoon, Jorge R. Gutiérrez took to his personal Twitter account to announce that he's in the process of developing a sequel to the Dia de los Muetos-inspired animated feature THE BOOK OF LIFE.

With Dallas-based animation house ReelFX signed on to produce, Gutiérrez is now hard at work on creating a follow-up to the 2014 film that dazzled audiences with the depiction of an ultra-colorful underworld coupled with an animated love story for the ages. Since the sequel is just now getting off the ground, loose story ideas are already in place, but it has not been confirmed as to if the original voice cast will return to reprise their respective roles.

In commenting on the film, executive vice president of strategic partnerships, Chuck Peil, told Entertainment Weekly that, "We're just starting the process of developing." Peil also says that there is "a much bigger story to tell" as well as "more worlds to explore."

You can check out Jorge's tweets below:

THE BOOK OF LIFE told the tale of Manolo, a musician with a heart of gold who becomes seperated from his childhood love, Maria, when a gambling god banishes him to the Land of the Remembered, where he must then fight his way back to life. The film starred a steller voice-acting cast featuring Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, and Ice Cube.

No release window has been set for THE BOOK OF LIFE 2, though you can watch the original film anytime you'd like on Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray formats today.
