Weekend Box Office Report: May 11-13, 2018

Avengers continue to dominate!

Marvel's costumed champions spent Mother's Day weekend ruling the box office once more, keeping AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR on top with an estimated $61.8 million!

With $547.8 million in the bank so far, the Russo Brothers' galactic smash-up passed the $532 finish of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY and the $534 million total of THE DARK KNIGHT to become the eighth-biggest domestic release ever.

While the heroes and their gauntlet-wielding nemesis will soon face competition from DEADPOOL 2 and SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, the all-star super-brawl should make it to the $623 million domestic total of the original THE AVENGERS (although the final tally for BLACK PANTHER may be out of reach).

The international figures paint a different picture, as the current $1.6 billion worldwide total makes INFINITY WAR the biggest comic book movie of all time (the status-shaking sequel opened with $200 million just in China this past weekend, setting a record for a Hollywood release in that country).

The new leader of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now in fifth behind AVATAR, TITANIC, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and JURASSIC WORLD on the list of the highest global grosses in history.

Opening in second place was the new PG-13 comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY with $18.5 million.

Aside from the $46 million start of ensemble remake GHOSTBUSTERS, this opening is the lowest for Melissa McCarthy starring vehicles (although she never previously had to contend with the power of infinity stones and the culmination of a ten-year franchise): THE BOSS started with $23.5 million, SPY opened with $29 million and TAMMY kicked off with $21.5 million.

The comedienne's latest effort cost a reported $30 million. Critics didn't find much humor in the college antics, giving it a 41% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

In third place was the new thriller BREAKING IN with an opening of $16.5 million.

With a reported cost of just $6 milliion, the PG-13 release (from V FOR VENDETTA director James McTeigue) proved to be effective counterprogramming against comedies and comic characters.

Critics weren't quite as excited to watch Gabrielle Union defend her kids from home invaders, giving the movie an average of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.

The PG-13 comedy remake OVERBOARD sank to fourth place with $10.1 million, dipping by 31% from its second-place opening last weekend. The $12 million Anna Faris/Eugenio Derbez romcom has a ten-day domestic total of $29.5 million

The John Krasinski/Emily Blunt horror movie A QUIET PLACE was in fifth with $6.4 million, bringing it to a domestic total of $169.5 million on its sixth weekend sneaking through theaters. The $17 million thriller has an additional $100 million from overseas for a worldwide total of $269 million.

Amy Schumer's I FEEL PRETTY was in sixth place with $3.7 million for a $43.8 million domestic total after four weekends in release. The PG-13 comedy cost a reported $32 million.

In seventh place was arcade-game adaptation RAMPAGE with $3.3 million as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his overgrown beasts have pounded their way to nearly $400 million worldwide (becoming the second-biggest videogame movie behind WARCRAFT).

The third Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody collaboration TULLY was in eighth place with $2.2 million, down 32% from last week's opening. The R-rated Charlize Theron comedy-drama has a ten-day domestic total of $6.9 million.

Marvel's BLACK PANTHER is clinging to the Top 10 even after three full months (and becoming available on-demand this past week). With $1.9 million in ninth place, T'Challa is still grasping at the $700 million domestic mark.

Stepping onto the list in tenth was the documentary RBG with $1.1 million as the peek at Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg's career expanded from limited release.

Outside the chart, SUPER TROOPERS 2 drove away with horror flick TRUTH OR DARE and David Tennant's thriller BAD SAMARITAN (after a single weekend on the list).

Next weekend has the return of Ryan Reynold's merc-with-a-mouth in DEADPOOL 2, plus the canine comedy SHOW DOGS and the elder alternative BOOK CLUB.
