Three different actresses have taken on the role of Lisbeth Salander in the GIRL THE WITH DRAGON TATTOO films (Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara) and now it’s Claire Foy’s (THE CROWN) turn to don the tattoo and jet-black clothing. We got a look at the new thriller, THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB, a few months ago, and now we have the full trailer that reveals way more of the plot (perhaps too much) and shows Salander is capable of taking on more of an action hero persona than we thought.
DON’T BREATHE and EVIL DEAD’s Fede Alvarez is taking on directing duties in this latest entry in the series, which comes after Stieg Larsson’s first three books in the Millennium series. After Larsson died author David Lagercrantz took over with SPIDER’S WEB, which will find Salander (Foy) and Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnasson) taking on a new mystery that digs deep into the former’s past, forcing her to confront her *gasps* evil twin sister Camilla (Sylvia Hoeks).
As an action-thriller, the movie looks solid, and Foy will likely kill is as Salander, but I miss the gritty mystery angle of the Swedish films and the David Fincher remake. The goal is probably to take the series in a whole new direction, which is fine, but anyone hoping for the dark, brutal, grimness of past movies may get something very different here. But is there really anything wrong with Salander going all Liam Neeson?
