Clark Gregg says Coulson is a “new guy” at S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain Marvel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

CAPTAIN MARVEL will, of course, be all about the title character of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), but there are some Marvel mainstays who will be there to help her out. Among them are Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson, who come in on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D. to assist Danvers on her journey. Coulson was a key figure within S.H.I.E.L.D. when we met him in 2008, but the actor says this new movie will show him as an agency greenhorn.

The actor was speaking with EW recently when he talked a little bit about MARVEL and where Coulson is at in his career. By the end, he will even make you look back on an old IRON MAN quote with newfound awe.

He’s a bit of a new guy in S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s a lot younger. It’s the earliest we will have seen him, so when he says, ‘Mr. Stark, this isn’t my first rodeo’ in Iron Man, this is maybe the rodeo he’s talking about.

We first met Coulson at the start of the MCU in 2008, but he was "killed" in 2012's THE AVENGERS, only to be brought back to life for ABC's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. The upcoming MARVEL takes place in the 90s, years before the events of IRON MAN in 2008, which means years before more superpeople come into play. Danvers, an Air Force pilot, finds herself caught in the middle of an alien war, soon becoming the mightiest hero Earth has ever seen. *SPOILERS* We saw a tease for the character in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR when Fury sends out a signal to her during the end credits stinger, hinting her role in AVENGERS 4.

As well, Gregg spoke with People and said he’s having a blast doing the movie and that Larson is “killing it” in the role of Danvers. He recalled working with her on the movie HOOT when she was a teenager, saying she’s turned into “one of our best actresses.”

Coulson has come such a long way since we were introduced to this possibly-one-and-done character in 2008, and it will be interesting to see him as a bit of a rookie in MARVEL. This movie will show several characters in a new light, including Fury, as Danvers will probably mark a whole new shift in how he and Coulson view the world and their place in it. Let me guess;  alien wars weren't in the job description were they, guys?
