Don’t hold your breath for a sequel to Sausage Party

Although Seth Rogen had previously said that SAUSAGE PARTY was the "first time we ended a movie with the intention of making another one" and that he wanted to "make sausage-talking movies for the rest of our lives," it seems that he's had a bit of a change of heart. While speaking with The Daily Beast, Rogen stated that if they're going to spend another few years working on an animated movie, he'd rather it be something totally different. We'll get into just how SAUSAGE PARTY ended after Rogen's quote, so, spoilers ahead.

I mean, we talk about it, but at the same time it took us a long time. The reception was good. My instinct, again, would just be if I were going to spend five years working on another animated movie, I’d probably want it to be something different. We inherently did think about where else that movie could go, but I think the thing most people liked was the originality of it, and that you felt like you were watching something you’d never seen before. By the nature of doing a sequel to it, it will lose that. When we’re making movies and TV shows, if there’s a dragon we’re chasing it’s that. We used to just want to make audiences laugh really hard, and now more than that, I like it when I feel like an audience is seeing something that they can’t believe they’re seeing; where they’re literally looking at the people beside them in the theater and are checking to see that everyone is seeing the same thing they are.

After the huge food orgy (that was certainly something) at the end of SAUSAGE PARTY, the gang then came to the realization that they were in fact cartoons voiced by actors in another dimension. After activating a homemade stargate to this dimension, the groceries stepped through in order to meet their creators. This ending certainly set the stage for a live-action/animated hybrid in the style of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?, which, coincidentally, is one of Seth Rogen's favourite movies.

That's one of the reasons why we took away the [original] ending because we thought, well, if that was the first scene of the next movie it's probably not what you would want it to be, with them just seeing us and finding us basically. But the idea of a live-action/animated movie, like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-style hybrid is also very exciting, mostly because Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Considering how cheap it was to produce, SAUSAGE PARTY certainly earned enough critical praise and sweet box-office dollars to justify a sequel, but it seems that the increasingly busy Seth Rogen would rather move on with other projects. Rogen added that after their "sequel experiment" last year (NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING) didn't go as well as they had hoped, he doesnt think that "sequels are our thing." So, never say never, but also don't hold your breath.
