New trailer unleashed for disaster movie Geostorm starring Gerard Butler

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Oof. Judging by that trailer it looks like GEOSTORM is going to be a disaster movie in more ways than one. The Dean Devlin-directed, Gerard Butler-starring, would-be epic has had some troubles getting to theater. In fact, I heard about test screenings happening three years ago! And it shows – with many plot threads that seem disconnected, and each trailer shifting its tone from dead-serious (with a slow-version cover of "It's a Wonderful World"), to another trailer that looked goofy and fun-loving. This new trailer seems to split the difference, and is probably most indicative of the film's tone overall. And that's not necessarily a good thing (though the frozen over Afghani village is a somewhat effective image).

Anyway, here's the official synopsis:

When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate start to attack Earth, it's a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.

Despite my ribbing, this does look like dumb-fun (not too different from something like the first INDEPENDENCE DAY that Devlin produced and co-wrote). So I might check it out just for that reason. Hopefully it's indeed more ID4 than THE CORE…

Meanwhile GEOSTORM will rain on theaters' parade October 20th.
