Weekend Box Office Report: September 2-4, 2016

Don't Breathe holds on to first!

The turmoil of a home invasion gone wrong was again the top draw for audiences this Labor Day wekeend, keeping DON'T BREATHE in the number one spot at the box office with an estimated $15.7 million!

The low-budget effort from EVIL DEAD remake director Fede Alvarez and producer Sam Raimi seems to have positive word-of-mouth going for it, losing only 40% from its first-place debut last week (the majority of horror movies tend to drop 60-70% in their second weekends). The visceral thriller, which cost a reported $10 million, has a 10-day domestic total of $51.1 million.

SUICIDE SQUAD was again in second place with $10 million as the DC Comics anti-heroes stretch toward a $300 million domestic total on its fifth weekend in theaters. If they can hang tough for a couple more weeks, the calamity-causing criminals could even end up defeating the $330 domestic total of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

Disney's live-action update of PETE'S DRAGON flapped from sixth up to third place with $6.4 million for a domestic total of $64.2 million after a month in release. The stop-motion animated fantasy KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS was close behind, moving down to fourth with $6.4 million, while Seth Rogen's R-rated animated food comedy SAUSAGE PARTY was in fifth place with $5.3 million.

Opening in sixth was the new Michael Fassbender/Alicia Vikander/Rachel Weisz drama THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS with $4.9 million. Filmmaker Derek Cianfrance's adaptation of the bestselling M.L. Stedman novel cost a reported $20 million and received a 61% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

In seventh place, the R-rated comedy BAD MOMS pulled in another $4.7 million and finally stumbled over the $100 million mark on its sixth weekend. The Jonah Hill/Miles Teller comedy WAR DOGS was right on their heels with $4.7 million for eighth place.

The acclaimed Jeff Bridges/Chris Pine/Ben Foster modern Western HELL OR HIGH WATER rode onto 1300 screens and landed in ninth with $4.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $14.6 million after several weeks in limited release. The Jason Statham sequel MECHANIC: RESURRECTION closed out the list, down 43% from its anemic opening last weekend.

Outside the chart, JASON BOURNE stepped out of the Top 10 (with $378 million worldwide) and the chariot of BEN-HUR came to a halt. Despite featuring talent like Paul Giamatti, Kate Mara and Jennifer Jason Leigh and opening on 2000 screens, the sci-fi thriller MORGAN only made $1.9 million.

Next weekend delivers Tom Hanks as the titular pilot in Clint Eastwood's SULLY, Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall deal with a nightmare surrogate in WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS, more animated talking animals arrive in THE WILD LIFE, and Kate Beckinsale spends time in THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM.
