Judge Dredd: Mega City One Karl Urban

Pete Travis'  DREDD was a very welcome return of the famed and feared Judge, and also one hell of a fun action flick, unfortunately, it didn't exactly impress at the box-office and hopes for a DREDD franchise seemed rather unlikely. The film has gone on to become somewhat of a cult favourite and has kept talk of the franchise alive in the years since its release. Earlier this year, DREDD received a welcome boost when it was announced that IM Global had entered a partnership with Rebellion to create a TV series based on the comic-book series to be titled Judge Dredd: Mega City One.

The potential show will be set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis, and the plan is to make the series an ensemble drama about a team of Judges, rather than just Judge Dredd himself. Of course, this gives them the option of avoiding Judge Dredd altogether if they choose, or maybe, just maybe, Karl Urban could return to reprise the role. While speaking with TrekMovie during the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, Urban indicated that he is willing to return and has already been in discussions with the producers about that very subject.

I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.

It would be great to see Karl Urban return as Dredd, particuarly as he has long been a vocal supporter of the continuation of the franchise. As Judge Dredd: Mega City One will feature a variety of the futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner, it may be easier for Urban to pop in every now and again as opposed to investing all of his time towards a starring role if he can't slot it into his schedule. Of course, the series isn't a sure thing just yet, so anything could happen, but it's gratifying to know that we may not have seen the last of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd.
