movie easter eggs

These days, part of the fun of watching a movie in theaters or at home with the ability to freeze frames, is finding the Easter eggs hidden within. For the history buffs out there, the origin of the cinematic Easter egg dates back to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Supposedly one day on the set, the cast decided to have a traditional Easter egg hunt, as you do, but some of the eggs were never found and actually appeared in frames of the movie! So if you're obsessed with finding hidden messages, jokes, and ways to make you look smart in front of your friends, check out these Easter eggs!

Understandably some of these have been around for a while, but some may be new to other readers; there’s no expiration date on sharing so enjoy and have fun!

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**

LIFEBOAT – He slays us

How does the director who managed to make a live cameo appearance in all of his movies manage it when the entire movie follows a small cast of characters adrift in a storm-tossed lifeboat? In a genius way! With the help of a Reduco Obesity Slayer ad, he not only managed to get himself in the movie LIFEBOAT, but also poke fun at himself in the process – that’s Hitchcock.

PSYCHO (1998) – Give him hell

Speaking of the legendary filmmaker, remember that time a remake of PSYCHO was a thing? While upsetting and unnecessary, it did likely see the absurdity of it all and imagined what Hitchcock himself would think of the whole mess. In the scene when Anne Heche walks into her work after being with Sam Loomis, look just outside the building as she walks in. Standing on the street is a really great Alfred Hitchcock body double shaking his hand and yelling at the director of this remake, Gus van Sant. Give him hell!

KING KONG (2005) – I bet it’s going to Lionel's Mom

With just a few minutes into Peter Jackson’s KING KONG remake and we get a nod to one of his first features. It’s in the first scene when we see of the bowels of the Venture and there are many cages shown, used to hold various animals. A sign on one of them clearly reads 'Sumatran Rat Monkey,' the creature that bites poor old Lionel Cosgrove's mum in DEAD ALIVE (BRAINDEAD), causing her to become a zombie. This could be seen as an omen of things to come perhaps.

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF – More Hughes plates

ferris bueller

A few eggs ago I showed you a license plate belonging to Anthony Michael Hall’s character, “The Brain”, at the beginning of John Hughes' THE BREAKFAST CLUB. His license plate reads EMC2, also known as Einstein’s theory of relativity (E=MC2). It should be noted that it wasn’t the last time Hughes played around with plates in his work.

Look at the license plates of the vehicles of the main characters in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF. They're all abbreviations for John Hughes' other movies:

Katie's (Mom) = VCTN (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION)
Tom's (Dad) = MMOM (MR.MOM)
Principle Rooney = 4FBDO (FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF)

The exception is Cameron's dad's Ferrari (see above), the license plate of which reads NRVOUS, of ocurse.
