Cruel Intentions is being revisited as a television series

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Once upon a time, CRUEL INTENTIONS was a big deal.

At the height of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER’s success, Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in a teen version of DANGEROUS LIASONS, where she made out a bit with Selma Blar. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe were also in the film, but whatever… Back to the kissing…

The rest of the film was less than memorable, but that smooch was ultimately the selling point for young minds like mine who were all about plunking down a few bucks at the box office to see some girl-on-girl action involving Buffy. Two other films bearing the CRUEL INTENTIONS name were made, but they were cast off into the cruel world of direct-to-DVD, so no one pays much attention to them anyway.

But now NBC wants to perhaps resurrect CRUEL INTENTIONS once again, bringing the concept to series as a sequel of sorts to the original film. A pilot script has been ordered with the story centering around the character of Bash Casey, the son of Phillippe and Witherspoon’s characters. Somehow this kid goes from a small-town Kansas upbringing into the lurid atmosphere of a San Francisco prep school, and… I think I’ve said enough.

I didn’t know that there was such a demand for anything CRUEL INTENTIONS at this point. There barely was back in 1999. But with old movies being revived as TV shows now a rampant thing, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Everything is fair game these days, as plenty of shit is being thrown against the wall to see what could stick.
