Alex Proyas deems the upcoming remake of The Crow to be “unnecessary”

A remake/reboot/reimagining/regurgitation of Alex Proyas' THE CROW has been in the works for a number of years but has almost always found itself hitting a wall before production could begin. The latest attempt at bringing THE CROW back to life was being set up at Relativity Media and that project experienced a revolving door of actors set to play Eric Draven, including Luke Evans and Jack Huston. After Relativity's bankruptcy, the remake of THE CROW was left without funding and without a lead, seemingly putting the final nail in THE CROW's coffin. However, last winter word broke that THE CROW remake was still on and that Corin Hardy would begin directing the film in March. As we haven't heard much information since then, and with no lead actor in play, it seems likely that the film may be experiencing yet another delay.

Alex Proyas, the director of the original film, spoke with Collider recently and revealed that he hopes that delay is everlasting.

You know, I’ve moved on and I just feel like it’s… I personally feel like it’s kind of unnecessary. I’ve said this many times, I’ve completed the original movie to honor Brandon and that’s the sole reason I did it. I’m happy I did it for that reason. I sort of feel like it’s his legacy and I personally don’t have a lot of time for people trying to reignite that movie in other ways. So you know, to me, this is one situation where it would be nice if Hollywood kind of left it alone and let it remain Brandon Lee’s legacy. I know every few years you hear about it a remake and it never really comes to fruition.

Most fans seem fairly opposed to a remake of THE CROW, which leads me to wonder just why those in charge of such decision$ seem hellbent on bringing the remake to fruition in the face of fan reaction and countless delays. This obviously wont be the last we hear of THE CROW, and perhaps not the last we hear from Alex Proyas on the subject, as he's recently been in the news for his Facebook post in which he had some harsh words for critics of GODS OF EGYPT.

GODS OF EGYPT is currently playing in theaters, and you can read our own Chris Bumbray's review of the film right here.
