Dark Phoenix to get major reshoots amidst release date push into early 2019

Oh X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX, you just can't catch a break, can you? Shortly after Twentieth Century Fox announced that they'll be pushing the release date of Simon Kinberg's X-Men-related sequel back to February 14, 2019, whispers of plans being made to reshoot large portions of the film have started to surface.

According to sources who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, during the film's post-production phase, the team behind the film had discovered that the project managed to come in slightly under-budget. As a result, it's been said that reshoots related to the movie's third act will soon commence. For the moment, no information about the new material has been made available, chiefly because Kinberg, who also serves as the film's writer and producer, has yet to write any additions or substitutions. The reshoots will reportedly cost the film another $10 million and are set to get underway in late summer/early fall of this year.

According to an insider who's close to the X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX project, Kinberg and the studio had been angling to move the release date of the film for some time after November 2nd, upon hearing that the mutant-powered sequel would be stacked against the theatrical debut of Disney's NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS. With the new Valentine's release date locked down, Fox can look forward to Phoenix having some much needed breathing room, particularly in today's superhero-saturated market.
