Last Updated on July 30, 2021

If you're ready for another of Disney's live-action fairy tales stuffed to the brim with family mysteries, magical realms, and princesses, fear not, for THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS will soon be alone to scratch that particular itch. The upcoming Disney flick is based upon E. T. A. Hoffmann's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" as well as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's classic ballet, and stars Mackenzie Foy (INTERSTELLAR) as Clara, a young girl who finds herself transported to a  parallel world while following a golden thread that’s supposed to lead her to a precious key that’s gone missing. THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS will also star Keira Knightley, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Matthew Macfadyen, and Jayden Fowora-Knight.

In a rare instance, THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS will find Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston both sharing the director credit after Johnson was brought in to direct close to a month of reshoots when Hallström wasn't available. Johnson's extensive background in visual effects also played a part in the choice, with Hallström saying, "It was an absolute blessing to have Joe Johnston step in when it became clear that I wouldn’t be available for reshoots. Joe is the ultimate expert in visual effects and I enjoyed collaborating with him on this film."

The official synopsis for THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS:

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS will hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
