Warner Bros. taps Simon Kinberg to direct remake of Logan’s Run

Hollywood has been trying to get a remake of the '70s sci-fi flick LOGAN'S RUN off the ground for quite some time, and it appears as though they're ready to take another crack at it. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has just closed to deal to get the project back on track by signing Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX) to direct and Peter Craig (THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY) to pen the script.

Taking place in a futuristic utopian society in which the population and consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by killing people as they reach the age of 30, LOGAN'S RUN follows Logan 5, a Sandman killer who has terminated others who have attempted to escape death, and is now faced with termination himself. Deadline notes that the upcoming remake could ditch the male lead and feature a female lead instead, but it's still early days. This isn't the first time that Warner Bros. has attempted to remake LOGAN'S RUN, and it also isn't the first time Simon Kinberg has been involved. The studio started development almost three years ago with Kinberg slated to write the screenplay, and at the time, Kinberg said that the remake would use lots of ideas from the original film, but would also serve as a "reinterpretation" of the original ideas.

There’s a lot from the original movie. I love the original movie and I think the storytelling in the original movie is pretty wonderful. The set up is great, I think there’s a lot of world creation that’s pretty awesome as well, though ultimately that’ll be the director’s domain. But yeah there’s a lot from the original film in it, and then there’s a lot of—I guess I would call it reinterpretation from the original film rather than just a whole scale recreation.

It's not known how much will change now that a new writer has been brought on board, but Warner Bros. is hoping that LOGAN'S RUN will spark a new franchise much like THE HUNGER GAMES. I suppose we'll have to wait and see. On another note, the Deadline reports also states that Simon Kinberg is currently writing an upcoming STAR WARS movie, which is something that was revealed when Disney's STAR WARS franchise began taking shape back in 2012, but we hadn't heard much about Kinberg's involvement since then. Could be old information, but Lucasfilm does have quite a few STAR WARS projects in development.
