DC looking to bring Supergirl to the big screen with 22 Jump Street writer

With DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. looking to make some changes to their cinematic universe, it's being reported by Deadline Hollywood that Superman's all-powerful cousin, Kara Zor-El, is next in line to get her own big screen adventure with a feature-length SUPERGIRL film. While details surrounding the project are quite scarce at this time, it's known that Oren Uziel (22 JUMP STREET, THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX) is currently hard at work on a script. So far, no director or producers of the project have been named, nor has the studio made mention of including The CW's Supergirl, Melissa Benoist, as the high-flying heroine.

As you're likley to know, Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl, is the cousin Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman. After escaping the doomed planet of Krypton, Kara's transport was damaged, leaving the teen would-be hero adrift in the cosmos. After several years had passed, and with no physical signs of aging, Kara crash landed on Earth and was taken in by the Danvers family. Her character debuted in 1959 in the pages of Action Comics #252, courtesy of creators Otto Binder and Al Plastino. After spending several years in Superman's shadow, Kara made her triumphant debut as Supergirl to the good people of National City. In 1972, Supergirl was granted her very own solo series at DC Comics, and in the years since has become a major player among the publishing arm's pantheon of superheroes.

For those of you who remember, Supergirl was the star of her own film starring Faye Dunaway and Mia Farrow, back in 1984. In more recent times, Melissa Benoist is gearing up for her fourth season as the blonde bombshell as a shining part The CW's SUPERGIRL TV series.

While I must admit that Uziel's name doesn't exactly inspire confidence in this project (for me, personally), I would remind myself to try and remain optimistic about this news. Currently, Urziel is penning the screenplay for the upcoming SONIC THE HEDGEHOG movie starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey from director Jeff Fowler (GOPHER BROKE, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE). Beyond that, Urziel is also scripting the newly announced MORTAL KOMBAT reboot from director Simon McQuoid. With that being said, I think it will be interesting to see how SUPERGIRL shapes up, and how one of the most altruistic characters in DC's history fits into the studio's revised plans for a brighter future on the big screen.
