The Conjuring 2 scares up big bucks!

Demonic possession was the biggest draw at theaters this weekend, putting THE CONJURING 2 on top at the box office with an estimated $40.3 million!

Director James Wan brought back paranormal investigators Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga for the spooky sequel, which opened just shy of the original THE CONJURING's $41.8 million start in July 2013. The first movie went on to $137 million domestic and a worldwide total of $318 million (on a reported $20 million cost).

THE CONJURING 2 has already grossed its reported production budget of $40 million just on its opening weekend, plus an additional $50 million from international audiences. The R-rated follow-up gave critics a satisfying fright with 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Opening in second place was the new videogame adaptation WARCRAFT with $24.3 million. The $160 million action-fantasy from filmmaker Duncan Jones (MOON, SOURCE CODE) was savaged by critics with 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, but overseas crowds didn't care about reviews — the movie broke records in China and is already at a $286 million worldwide total.

The new illusionist thriller NOW YOU SEE ME 2 opened in third place with $23 million. That's a few cards short of the $29.3 million opening of the first NOW YOU SEE ME, which ended up with $117 million domestic and $351 million worldwide back in 2013. The sequel has also made an additional $22.8 million in release overseas.

The follow-up, which cost a reported $90 million (compared to the original's $75 million budget), finds the "Four Horsemen" (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and now Lizzy Caplan) using their magic for more Robin Hood antics. But their prestidigitation couldn't captivate critics, who gave it 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS was knocked down to fourth with $14.8 million, a 58% fall from the sequel's first-place debut last week. The heroic reptilian bipeds have a 10-day domestic total of $61 million, and have gathered $116 million worldwide.

In fifth place was X-MEN: APOCALYPSE with $10 million on its third weekend in theaters. Aside from THE WOLVERINE, the latest mutant altercation currently has the lowest domestic total in the X-franchise, although its $478 million worldwide total is only behind DAYS OF FUTURE PAST ($747 million) and DEADPOOL ($777 million).

The drama ME BEFORE YOU placed in sixth with $9.2 million, tumbling 50% from its opening last weekend. The Emilia Clarke/Sam Claflin romance has a 10-day domestic total of $36.8 million on a reported cost of $20 million.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE was in seventh with $6.7 million. Although the animated feature is still flapping toward $100 million domestic, it's the second highest-grossing videogame adaptation behind TOMB RAIDER (a feat that WARCRAFT seems unlikely to challenge). The feathered fighters have flown to a worldwide total of $312 million.

Toward the bottom of the list, the sequel ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS continues to dwindle, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR keeps flirting with $400 million domestic, and Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK hangs in the Top 10 for another weekend.

Outside the chart, the Seth Rogen sequel NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING disappeared along with Shane Black's THE NICE GUYS and Andy Samberg's music comedy POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING, which stopped after a single weekend in the Top 10.

Next weekend pairs up Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart for the action-comedy CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE and Pixar brings back popular swimmers for the sequel FINDING DORY, while limited releases include the horror movie CLOWN (from upcoming SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING director Jon Watts).
