The cast and crew of Galaxy Quest are ready for a sequel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

GALAXY QUEST has truly become a cult classic among Sci-Fi enthusiasts. While it did “okay” at the box office ($71 million on a $45 million budget), the movie has garnered a following over the years, and that’s because the filmmakers were aware of the absurdities that people go along with when it comes to Science-Fiction. STAR TREK and STAR WARS are inherently cheesy, but we love it for that. Rather than bashing or mimicking it, GALAXY QUEST knew to how to have fun with it. It is a love letter for fans of the genre. With that said, MTV recently compiled an oral history of the film for it’s 15th anniversary. It’s a fantastic read (check it out here) with a lot of great anecdotes, but I’ve pulled the quotes regarding a sequel for your reading pleasure.

Tim Allen, regarding a follow-up:

There’s a sequel somewhere. It’s written, but I haven’t really gotten a straight answer about it, but Hollywood is a very peculiar place. It is none of my business. How’s this for a sequel: it’s 15 years later. The Thermians come back, but they haven’t aged. Maybe they don’t have warp anymore so it took 15 years. They have to search for a new homeland. Sarris [the main villain] is gone but his family never forgets and you take it from there. . .

Writer Robert Gordon on a story for the sequel:

On the record, I definitely have ideas for a sequel. Off the record, OK, turn your recorder off.

Justin Long:

So many people ask me about a sequel.

Producer Mark Johnson:

If we announced a sequel or a TV show, there’d be genuine excitement, not “It’s too late.” We’ve tried. I’d do it, Dean would do it. But we need Bob. It’s a Bob Gordon joint, but Bob is a very specific guy.

Sam Rockwell:

F*ck yeah, a sequel would be amazing. If it was a respectful script to GALAXY QUEST.

Sigourney Weaver:

Tell Bob, tell Dean, we are all ready for a sequel. I still have my costume!

Alan Rickman:

People didn’t get it when it first came out. It is genuinely funny, however. Extremely funny. A truly great piece of writing.

It’s obvious that GALAXY QUEST was a project that everyone is excited and proud of and I think that shows in the final film. I would say that given the Abrams’ Star Trek films and upcoming Star Wars flicks, a GALAXY QUEST sequel would be more relevant now than ever. Take advantage of the fact that Hollywood is making Sci-Fi cool again! If GUARDIANS of the GALAXY is any indication, audiences are willing to have a little fun with the genre. And for God’s sake, please let Sigourney Weaver drop an F-bomb this time!
