AI tasked with writing final Song of Ice & Fire novel Winds of Winter

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's an old joke at this point to talk about how long it's taking George R.R. Martin to write the next book in his SONG OF ICE & FIRE series (of which the wildly successful HBO show GAME OF THRONES is based on). Some also joke – I'd argue mean-spiritedly – that his health will cause him to keel over before he can finish the series proper. How true that is remains to be seen, but let's hope it's not. Either way, it's been over half a decade, and still no book, with no release date in sight.

But never fear! Nerds are here! Software engineer Zack Thoutt is training a recurrent neural network (RNN) to predict the events of the (hopefully) upcoming sixth SoI&F novel WINDS OF WINTER.

Anyway, here's the first excerpt from the full first chapter, seen from Tyrion's POV. Let's take a look:

Tyrion could hear Lord Aemon's coughing. "I miss for it. Why did you proper?"

"I feared Master Sansa, Ser," Ser Jaime reminded her. "She Baratheon is one of the crossing. The second sons of your onion concubine."

Lady Donella length of a longsword, the hair that went ready to climb side from her. And all between them were belaquo bonebreaker and the night's watch ride in their room. Only he could not look at them, even others sure. "How could you leave the world?"

"Some must, for you," a woman's voiced up lazily. "Gods, Reek."

She poured off two eyes and stepped down under the fire. "She will find your brother, and now I heard her since she was standing the bowl. The night was fair and damp.

Fascinating.

Obviously this isn't canon, and won't replace George R.R. Martin's writing, but it has made some interesting predictions, such as Jamie killing Cersei (which is something most fans believe will be the case). At the same time, it also brought Ned Stark has come back to life, which, you know, could happen. But would definitely be lame.

Meanwhile, the next season of GAME OF THRONES will most likely won't be released until 2019, while WINDS OF WINTER will come to bookshelves possibly never, who the fuck knows?
