Don’t worry, Westworld creators insist they know how the series will end

When you're dealing with a story which spans multiple timelines and dozens of characters, I'd imagine that it would be difficult to keep track of every single arc over the course of a season, but Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have insisted that they know exactly where the story is headed. Many shows have come under fire for "making shit up as they go along" which has led audiences to want reassurances that there is indeed a master plan in place. During an interview with Stuff, co-creator Lisa Joy confirmed that they know where the Westworld story is headed, in fact, they've known from the very beginning.

We have an ending in mind; we've had it from the pilot. It's very emotional, I think. I can't tell you exactly when that ending will come but I think for every season what we try to do is tell a chapter of the story that gives you closure and then opens a door to a new chapter. The overarching question of the series is, what will become of this new lifeform? So I feel it would be irresponsible to not have an end goal in mind.

That's nice to hear, but I suppose there's still quite a wait ahead of us before we learn whether or not they stick the landing. The second season of Westworld recently came to a close and set the stage for an exciting new direction which will explore the world outside of the park. Exactly what they discover out there remains a mystery, but Lisa Joy has claimed that it will be like an entirely new world. "This series is about reinvention and scope. The first season was a more intimate look at the park from within the loops. In the second season, the hosts broke out of their loops and were able to explore more of the park," Joy said. "In the third season, they've broken out of the park itself. We're in terra incognita. From the beginning, when Jonah and I were thinking about the series as far back as the pilot, we knew we wanted to explore other worlds in the park, and we also knew the one world we would start to see little glimpses of throughout the first two seasons was the real world, and that we would get there eventually — and when we did, it would be a whole new experience."

Even though Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have an ending in mind for Westworld, it may not reach the finish line exactly how they intended. As fans dissect the mysteries of the series and audiences react favorably or unfavorably to certain elements, the journey towards the conclusion could easily take a few detours.

What did you think of Westworld's second season? Are you still pumped for more?
