Trailer and clip for The Sessions starring John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, and William H. Macy

THE SESSIONS is a dramedy starring John Hawkes (WINTER’S BONE), Helen Hunt, and William H. Macy about a man afflicted with polio (Hawkes) who makes the decision that he no longer wants to be a virgin and hires a “sex surrogate” (Hunt) after seeking advice from a priest (Macy).  Written and directed by Ben Lewin and based on a true story, the film took home the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is about to expand its release to theaters this Fall.

I’m a big fan of Hawkes, who is one of the most underrated character actors working today.  THE SESSIONS looks like an opportunity for him to shine in the spotlight, which is much-deserved.  With Hunt and Macy there to lend their considerable talents to the film, as well as Moon Bloodgood as Hawke’s caretaker, the film has all the makings for a moving portrait of a somewhat taboo subject.  It’s not your run-of-the-mill dramedy, but sometimes that’s just the formula needed to pull people in.
