Incredibles 2 to top Finding Dory as highest-grossing animated movie

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

INCREDIBLES 2 flexed its animated muscles last month when it shattered the opening weekend record for an animated movie with a whopping $180 million. Big things were on the horizon for the long-awaited sequel, and by the end of today, the movie will have stolen the crown away from FINDING DORY to become the biggest animated movie ever at the domestic box office.

As of the end of Friday, the movie has cleared $485.1 million at the North American box office, putting it only a mil behind the $486.2 million total of DORY. INCREDIBLES is expected to make a solid $30 million total this weekend, which means by the time you’re reading this story the movie will have already passed DORY’S total. Puny fish.

INCREDIBLES 2’s run is incredibly impressive for a few more reasons, another being that by the end of the weekend the movie will also be the first animated flick to cross $500 million at the domestic box office. Not only will it pass it but as it continues to be one of the top movies at the box office it could easily fly higher and higher to top ROGUE ONE’s $532 million to become one of the top 10 movies ever in North America.

Worldwide is a different story. DORY was able to go beyond $1 billion, but so far INCREDIBLES 2 has yet to crack $700 million. It still has a few territories to open in, mainly Japan, so we'll see how it goes. But, still, things are going well over here, and if this weekend isn't going awesome enough it’s likely the movie will inch out a very close win over its nearest competition, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, to maintain its second-place spot. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP will easily be number one with an $80 million opening.

We can attribute INCREDIBLES’ success to the fact that, aside from some PG-13 blockbusters like SOLO, JURASSIC WORLD and ANT-MAN, there hasn’t really been anything families could go to this summer. INCREDIBLES 2 offered the only major family-friendly option this summer so far, and now mix that with the anticipation behind it and the movie is reaping all the rewards in the land. The movie will lose some of that thunder when HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 comes out next week, but INCREDIBLES will still be bringing in some of that sweet, sweet green even with competition. The ball's your court now, TOY STORY 4.
