Hotel Transylvania 2 checks in at #1!

Adam Sandler's animated vampire returned to screens this weekend and put HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 on top with an estimated $47.5 million!

The monster-packed sequel not only exceeded the $42.5 million opening of the original HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA (which finished with a $358 million worldwide total), but also set a new record for highest September opening weekend.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 also had the second-biggest opening for an Adam Sandler project, just behind the $47.6 million start for the remake of THE LONGEST YARD.

Opening in second was the PG-13 comedy THE INTERN with a surprisingly solid $18.2 million. The Anne Hathaway/Robert De Niro team-up from director Nancy Meyers (IT'S COMPLICATED, SOMETHINGS'S GOTTA GIVE) cost a reported $35 million and received a 56% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes, but an 'A-' CinemaScore from audiences.

Last weekend's champ MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS slowed to third with $14 million. The post-apocalyptic young-adult action sequel faltered 53% from its opening.

The mountain expedition EVEREST climbed onto 3000 screens after its IMAX-only release last week and scaled to fourth place with $13 million. The fact-based Jake Gyllenhaal/Josh Brolin drama cost a reported $55 million and is getting ready to cross $100 million worldwide.

The Johnny Depp mobster drama BLACK MASS dropped from second to fifth with $11.5 million. The story of notorious Boston criminal James "Whitey" Bulger was down 49% from last week's opening for a 10-day domestic total of $42.6 million (on a reported cost of $53 million).

Cheap thrills followed, with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan's low-budget THE VISIT in sixth with $6.7 million and THE PERFECT GUY in seventh with $4.7 million.

Behind the religious melodrama WAR ROOM was Eli Roth's new cannibal horror movie THE GREEN INFERNO in ninth place with $3.4 million. The R-rated jungle terror (Roth's first directorial effort since 2007's HOSTEL PART II), originally intended for release last September, could only scare up a 'C-' CinemaScore from moviegoers and a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sneaking into the bottom slot was the R-rated Emily Blunt drug thriller SICARIO with $1.7 million as it expanded to 59 locations, giving it a strong $30k per-screen average before it goes nationwide next week. It currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Outside the chart, hits STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION left the list along with CAPTIVE and A WALK IN THE WOODS. In limited release, the Andrew Garfield/Michael Shannon real-estate thriller 99 HOMES started out with a $16k per-screen average.

Next weekend has Matt Damon stranded on the red planet in THE MARTIAN, going against the wide release of SICARIO, the Tom Hardy twins in LEGEND and (on Wednesday) the IMAX-only debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's skyscraper stroll THE WALK.
