Matthew McConaughey is from another dimension in The Beach Bum trailer

Harmony Korine made a big splash in 2012 with the lucid, fever dream that was SPRING BREAKERS, and now the auteur is back with his new, equally bonkers-looking vehicle, THE BEACH BUM with Matthew McConaughey. The first trailer calls to mind the same visual style as BREAKERS, with McConaughey shedding the sexy, beach dude persona of his earlier days and replacing it with, well, a different kind of beach dude persona.

In the movie McConaughey plays Moondog, a poet who lives life on his own terms, doing whatever he wants, wearing anything he wants and having a righteous time all the time. With him for said good times are Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Snoop Dogg, Stefania LaVie Owen and Martin Lawrence, making for the most intriguing ensemble in recent memory. Sadly, James Franco’s Alien from BREAKERS won’t be in attendance, even though this very much looks like his scene.

BREAKERS is a wild trip of a movie, and this one looks of a similar caliber, and the trailer advertises a strong McConaughey performance to anchor it all down. Perhaps this movie will achieve the same cult status as Korine’s last movie, but hopefully, we won’t have to wait six years for his next.

THE BEACH BUM is set to hit theaters in 2019, and you can see McConaughey in WHITE BOY RICK in theaters September 14.
