Weekend Box Office Report: January 12-14, 2018

Jumanji stays on top!

For a second weekend, JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE held its grip on the #1 spot at the box office with an estimated $27 million!

The PG-13 adventure fended off a number of new wide release challengers for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, pushing its domestic total to $283.1 million.

Director Jake Kasdan's $90 million sequel with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black has also accumulated $666 million worldwide on its fourth weekend in theaters.

Director Steven Spielberg's THE POST placed second with $18.6 million on its first weekend in wide release.

The fact-based drama with Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and a cast of familiar faces now has a domestic total of $23 million after a strong run in limited release since Christmas weekend.

The PG-13 journalistic thriller cost a reported $50 million, and currently holds a solid 88% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read the JoBlo review HERE.

Opening in third place was the new Liam Neeson action vehicle THE COMMUTER with $13.4 million.

The actor's fourth collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra started below UNKNOWN ($21.8 million) and NON-STOP ($28.8 million), but ahead of the opening weekend for RUN ALL NIGHT ($11 million).

The train-based thriller (also featuring THE CONJURING duo Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) cost a reported $30 million. Critics thought it was a bumpy ride, giving it a 56% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

Supernatural spinoff INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY was in fourth place with $12.1 million, scaring off 59% of business from its opening last weekend.

The PG-13 horror movie with Lin Shaye's ghost-chaser has a ten-day domestic total of $48.3 million, and a worldwide total of $92 million (on a reported $10 million cost).

Hugh Jackman's circus musical THE GREATEST SHOWMAN was in fifth with $11.8 million, bringing the $84 million singing spectacle to $94.5 million domestic and $194 million worldwide on its fourth weekend in release.

In sixth place was STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI with $11.2 million. Director Rian Johnson's chapter in the space saga has a domestic total of $591.5 million and has collected $1.26 billion worldwide, putting it past Disney's live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to become the highest-grossing global release of 2017.

In seventh place was the new PG-rated sequel PADDINGTON 2 with an opening of $10.6 million.

The $50 million tale of the charismatic talking bear (and some humans like Hugh Grant) got a shorter start than the $19 million opening of the first PADDINGTON in 2015.

The second screen adventure of the beloved childrens' book character has already grabbed an additional $125 million from international crowds (the first movie finished with $268 million worldwide).

Opening in eighth place was the new hitman thriller PROUD MARY with $10 million.

The R-rated release with Taraji P. Henson as a professional killer cost a reported $14 million. Critics assassinated the action attempt with a 22% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

In ninth place was PITCH PERFECT 3 with $5.6 million as the musical sequel arrived at $94.6 million domestic and a worldwide total of $162.3 million (on a reported $45 million cost). The Gary Oldman-starring Winston Churchill biopic DARKEST HOUR closed out the list with $4.5 million, taking it to $35.7 million domestic and $54 million worldwide.

Outside the chart, Pixar's COCO made room in the Top 10 for the new competition along with FERDINAND, MOLLY'S GAME and ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD. In limited release, Paul Thomas Anderson's PHANTOM THREAD expanded to 62 locations for a $1.1 million weekend (it goes to 500 screens next week), while award winners and hopefuls like THE SHAPE OF WATER, LADY BIRD and I, TONYA continue to do decent business on a few hundred screens.

Next weekend has the Chris Hemsworth military action movie 12 STRONG, the Gerard Butler heist thriller DEN OF THIEVES and the drama FOREVER MY GIRL, plus the Christian Bale Western HOSTILES expands to wide release.
