James Wan celebrates start of 2018 with Aquaman image

Welcome to 2018, everyone. I know last year didn’t leave everyone super hopeful for this year, what with all the natural disasters and the red-haired goblin running around Washington, but there’s a lot to look forward to this year. Among those reasons is seeing the adventures of a guy who can talk to fish in his first ever solo movie in AQUAMAN (with Jason Momoa starring), and now director James Wan has teased the film with a sick look at some ancient, under-the-sea artifacts.

The image was posted to Instagram at the beginning of the new year, with Wan posting a little message wishing us all a happy new year. The picture shows a bit of Atlantean armor (possibly his arm plate?) as well as a hook on the side. Along with the image comes a little caption saying "Here's to making a splash in 2018!"

The character debuted in JUSTICE LEAGUE about two months ago, and though the movie didn’t exactly meet expectations with so-so reviews and box office, Momoa earned praise for his wild, cool-as-hell Arthur Curry/Aquaman. The new movie stars Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The image is indeed cool, but like many of you sea-loving nerds, I'm still looking forward to that trailer. The DC movies have been having a rough go of it, but I think they'll have much better luck with their solo movies than their team-up flicks. I didn't hate JL, and thought Momoa was a standout, so seeing him take center stage in some sweet underwater fight scenes gives me a reason to look forward to a STAR WARS-less Christmas.

AQUAMAN swims into theaters December 21.
