Kevin Smith’s weight loss caused rewrites for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

After Kevin Smith suffered a near-fatal heart attack earlier this year that’s been dubbed “the widowmaker” he’s been on the path of the healthy man. In the last few months, he’s lost a staggering amount of weight, dropping from 256 lbs to 205. Not only has this transformation impacted the newly-lean Smith for the better, it’s also affected his script for the planned JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT, which he says he had to go back and tinker with after dropping so many pounds.

The filmmaker was talking on his podcast – Fatman on Batman – recently when he said that during his downtime he went back into go into the script and thus began taking out all the fat jokes aimed at his character, Silent Bob. The jokes may not work as well if he’s not, you know, fat.

“That three-day, four-day weekend whatever the f–ck it was, all my work was done. Then I was like manufacturing work for myself, so I went and did another draft of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. This is the eighth draft of the script and at this point, it’s weird, this is the draft where I had to take out all the fat jokes ’cause they just don’t make sense anymore.”

This @weightwatchers Ambassador is thrilled to announce that I’VE LOST 51 POUNDS! Six months ago from right now, I was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack I’d had the night before. When I went to my Doctor a week later, she told me “The best thing you can do for yourself now is to lose 50 pounds.” Half a year later, I can report that I followed Doctor’s orders: I started at 256 and now I weigh 205. This is the lightest I’ve been since high school! My hope now is I can slowly lose another 10 with #weightwatchers and get down to my birth weight of 195! But for now, I’m ecstatic to have reached this chunky milestone! I wanna thank #pennjillette for his book #presto, @raycronise for getting me started with his potato famine, and the good folks at #weightwatchers for their app-based program that made it easy to keep track of and control my eating! And I also wanna thank my kid @harleyquinnsmith – the little vegan astronaut who explored this meatless/milkless galaxy ahead of me, leading by example. Since I never wanted to see the inside of a hospital ever again, I simply copied the Kid. So this wasn’t a diet: these results came from a total lifestyle change of eating solely plant-based foods (which is tough because I hate vegetables). But mostly, I wanna thank all of you as well – for the kind and encouraging words along the way. Never underestimate the power of positive feedback: you folks telling me I looked better or healthier helped me stick with it. An encouraging word can really make a difference in someone’s life and your compliments kept me going! And just look where I went! #KevinSmith #WWambassador #WWFreestyle #WWFamily #WWBros #weightlosstransformation #weightloss #WWCommunity #ad *People following the Weight Watchers program can expect to lose 1-2lbs per week.

Silent Bob’s other half, Jay (Jason Mewes), has fired tons of weight-based insults and jokes at his way over the decade they were in movies together – but now things have changed. Smith then changed the jokes to diet-related ones, which works all the better, because it’s much funnier to make jabs about yoga and eating kale than yet another fat joke.

What we can also take from this is that Smith is still hard at work tinkering with the script, which will reunite the weed-smoking, loitering-loving duo. The most recent update he gave was back in May, where he said that this was a direct sequel to 2001’s JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK and “not really strictly a reboot in the way that people think of a reboot.”

If you remember Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back it was a movie in which Jay and Silent Bob found out Hollywood was making a movie about them, so they went cross country to Hollywood to stop that from happening. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is completely f—ing different. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jay and Silent Bob find out that Hollywood is making a reboot of that old movie that they had made about them, and they have to go across the country to Hollywood to stop it all over again. it’s literally the same f—ing movie all over again. It’s a movie that makes fun of sequels and remakes and reboots while being all three at the same time.”

Smith deserves a ton of praise for sticking with his goals and dropping so much weight, looking healthier than he ever has. Hopefully this means he can take this eighth draft of the script and start shooting the movie so we can se him and Mewes return to the big screen in all their (now thiner) glory.
