UPDATE: So, you want to see a Veronica Mars movie? The ball’s in your court as Kristen Bell tries to kickstart it

UPDATE: So, not only has this campaign made its goal of $2 million in under 24 hours, but it’s still going. Never underestimate the power of the fans. I firmly believe this is going to change things in big ways, both good and bad. Stay tuned for news on a VERONICA MARS movie!

I’ve never seen Veronica Mars, so I can’t say whether this is worth your while or not.  However, I have plenty of friends who have seen it and have tried to convince me to drink the Kristen Bell Kool-Aid and watch the show, so I know that there is a strong fan following for the short-lived series. Much like Joss Whedon‘s Firefly, which couldn’t sustain ratings despite the professed love from fans, Veronica Mars went off the air after three seasons.  Since then, fans (aka Cloud Watchers) have continuously rallied for a movie with show creator Rob Thomas enthusiastic about the idea.  However, nothing has ultimately taken shape since the show ended, with Bell continuing on with the good (FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL) and the bad (WHEN IN ROME) and the cable (House of Lies).

Now, in a last ditch effort, both Bell and Thomas are mounting a Kickstarter campaign to help finance the film and convince Warner Bros. that there’s enough desire to see a Veronica Mars movie.  If they’re able to raise $2 million bucks in 30 days then apparently that’s enough for WB to greenlight a movie.  So, there you have it.  Time for the fans to put their money where the kickstarter is.  This is what I love about kickstarter (and programs like it).  It’s a venue that puts you in a position to really affect what you will (or won’t) see, even if you’re voting with money.  I think it’s a great moment, too, to show if fan’s support is really there.

For those not in the know, this is what Veronica Mars is all about:

The series is set in the fictional town of Neptune, California, and stars Kristen Bell as the title character, a student who progresses from high school to college while moonlighting as a private investigator under the tutelage of her detective father. In each episode, Veronica solves a different stand-alone case while working to solve a more complex mystery. The first two seasons of the series each had a season-long mystery arc, introduced in the first episode of the season and solved in the season finale. The third season took a different format, focusing on smaller mystery arcs that would last the course of several episodes.

If you’re a fan and want to see this happen, then dust off your wallet and head over to the Kickstarter page and make a pledge.  In the time it took me to write this, they went from $50,000 to $100,000, so I’d say it’s looking good so far…
