Deepwater Horizon exclusive BTS clip and peek at VR app 360 commentary

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Peter Berg's DEEPWATER HORIZON starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, and Kate Hudson hits digital release today, with the blu-ray slated to drop on January 10th and today we have a really cool behind-the-scenes clip that focuses on the explosive disaster that ripped through the real-life rig, causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history. The film remains one of the best I've seen this year, capturing the heroism of the men and women who survived and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with respect, realism, and showmanship. A tough thing to pull off when bringing real peoples lives to the big screen.

In addition to the clip, I had the opportunity to take a look at the new DEEPWATER VR APP, which is essentially a 360 VR commentary that places you in the same room with director Peter Berg and editor Colby Parker Jr. as they talk about the film. Using a VR viewing device, such as Google Cardboard, the mobile Deepwater VR experience includes three scenes with commentary and is free to download through the Apple App Store or Google Play (compatible with iOS and Android devices). The first scene is fully accessible when the app is downloaded and the additional scenes are unlocked using audio recognition while viewing the film. Overall, it's a unique way to experience commentary, although contingent on your desire to use your phone for such a thing. With VR making the leap into our homes more and more, I'm sure this is a peek into the future of how movies are transitioned from the theater to home video.

You can download the app on iTunes HERE or Google Play HERE. You can get your own set of Google Cardboard VR glasses HERE.

DEEPWATER HORIZON is now available on digital HD and will hit 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray on January 10th. PREORDER HERE!
