Tye Sheridan says Dark Phoenix is more like a drama than a superhero movie

20th Century Fox did something bold when they decided to let James Mangold take his more dramatic, serious approach to LOGAN, creating one of the greatest comic book movies ever. Perhaps the studio wants to go down that route with future X-Men movies, as actor Tye Sheridan has said the movie is much more like a drama than a regular superhero movie.

While speaking with The Wrap recently, Sheridan spoke a bit about how his character handles Jean Grey’s (Sophie Turner) transformation in the new movie, before hinting they approached this movie very seriously.

Jean goes crazy in the movie. Well, Cyclops doesn’t think she’s going crazy — Cyclops just thinks she’s gotta work some stuff out. It’s interesting, the drama in the movie. We treated this movie as much more of a drama versus a superhero film.

Turner herself has spoken about how much of a game changer she thinks DARK PHOENIX is, saying it will usher in a “whole new genre of superhero movie.” She attributes this to director Simon Kinberg, who she says has been given the freedom to make the movie his own after producing the films for years.

Between Sheridan and Turner’s quotes, it seems like Fox wants to solidify their superhero movies as ones that are experimenting with the genre. Movies like DEADPOOL and LOGAN went places no other movies in the genre had, while the upcoming NEW MUTANTS is promising a comic book/horror movie hybrid. Hey, if they know what they’re doing I’m in all the way, just as long as you keep away Blue-Man Apocalypse.

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX hits theaters November 2.
