The holiday season is where musicals truly have time to shine, with movies like CHICAGO, LES MISERABLES, and last year's LA LA LAND bringing in blockbuster numbers. This year the Hugh Jackman-led THE GREATEST SHOWMAN could be another smash hit for the genre as the new trailer will be sure to win over audiences by showing off some spectacular musical numbers and show-stopping set pieces. The story of P.T. Barnum and the beginning of his legendary circus is the perfect story for an old-school, sensational musical, and who better to lead it than Jackman, who may, in fact, be one of the world's greatest living showmen.
Rounding out the cast are Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson, and there are high hopes the movie itself will be not only a financial hit but an Oscar contender as well. Big musicals like this (like the aforementioned three) all had a strong presence their respective years, with voters being one over by the sheer spectacle and pageantry. Surely the movie will be a threat in the costume and production design categories, but time will only tell if it can break through to the bigger categories, such as Best Actor and Best Picture.
