You may not have heard news on the film its based on, but I’m sure that many of you know about the DC sniper attacks back in the early 2000s. John Allen Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo shot people at random in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

The official 2013 Sundance Selection gives a disturbing portrait of the events with a focus on Muhammed’s relationship with the young Malvo. Isaiah Washington leads the film with this portrayal as Muhammed which is sure to bring him acclaim. Watching him take in Malvo and treat him like a son only to eventually use him as a pawn in his terrorist attacks against innocent people is terrifying.

Inspired by true events, BLUE CAPRICE investigates the notorious and horrific Beltway sniper attacks from the point of view of the two perpetrators, whose distorted father-son relationship facilitated their long and bloody journey across America. Marked by captivating performances by Isaiah Washington and Tequan Richmond, lyrical camerawork, and a unique and bold structure, BLUE CAPRICE documents the mechanisms that lead its subjects to embrace physical violence. BLUE CAPRICE paints a riveting portrait of 21st-century America and a haunting depiction of two cold-blooded killers that endures long after the lights come up.

BLUE CAPRICE hits theaters September 13, 2013.
