Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Laurel and Hardy remain one of the most renowned comedy duos in film history, making a name for themselves in the early days of motion pictures, rocketing to fame. You may know their names, but the upcoming STAN & OLLIE will take you into their lives with Steve Coogan (Stan Laurel) John C. Reilly (Oliver Hardy) playing the title duo. They look perfect in their roles, and you can check them out for yourselves in the first official image.

The image comes with the announcement that the movie will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival this year, where it will be the closing movie on October 21. You can check them out below and wonder how anyone wore ties that were so tiny, and yet still looked so good.

The movie takes place in the 50’s, decades after the duo launched to success with a series of short films and live performances that captured the admiration of the world. The film finds them as they embark on a farewell tour across the U.K. and Ireland, and even though the stresses and schedule take their toll they’re able to survive thanks to the support of their wives – Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) – and their love for each other. Friendship for the win!

The movie was written by Jeff Pope (PHILOMENA, also with Coogan) and directed by Jon S. Baird (FILTH), the latter of whom spoke about premiering the movie in London.

I’m really proud to be able to give the film its world premiere in London; a city that’s so dear to myself and I know was to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Stan & Ollie, at its heart, is a love story between old friends, who just happen to be two of the most iconic comedic characters in Hollywood’s history.

STAN & OLLIE is set to arrive in the U.K. on January 11, 2019, but a U.S. arrival has yet to be announced.
