Attica! Attica! Dog Day Afternoon is being groomed for Broadway

DOG DAY AFTERNOON is coming to the Great White Way.

Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures has commissioned a stage adaptation of Sidney Lumet‘s 1975 film for a future run on Browadway, with playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis brought in to work on making that happen. The film, based on a true story, starred Al Pacino and John Cazale as a pair of truly awful bank robbers seeking to score some quick cash in order to pay for a sex-change operation.

This isn’t the first time Warner Bros. has gone mining their film catalog for some stage treatment, having recently brought MISERY to Broadway with Bruce Willis, and with THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY and ELF on their books in the past. DOG DAY AFTERNOON may seem like a strange choice, but given the few locations of the film and the vast amount of dialogue that drive the story, this could potentially work.
