Jon M. Chu isn’t sure where Masters of the Universe is going to end up

Okay, so Channing Tatum won’t be He-Man in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE but what’s the status on this thing?

All we seem to get is talk, talk, and more talk. Is this thing destined to be shelved forever? The only movie version we ever got was in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren in the role of Prince Adam. Despite owning it and loving Lundgren, it’s really f*cking terrible. There’s a great fanbase for the animated series that started out originally as a toy line. But do the fans think that a decent adaptation is possible? As a kid, I loved He-Man especially She-Ra (my first action figure). I watched it when it ran for a second time on USA Network. I believe that if all the right elements are there it could work.

Jon M. Chu has been on the project for a bit now, and his follow up to G.I. JOE: RETALIATION seems to be coming along quicker than MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. So when will we see He-Man and Skeletor battle it out on the big screen? SuperHeroHype spoke with the director who discussed the timing for both projects:

“I think that what helps us is knowing what we do in ‘Joe’ and knowing that ‘Masters’ has to be very different and has to feel very different, but the script for ‘Masters of the Universe’ is what really hooked me. I love ‘Masters of the Universe,’ but I didn’t know necessarily how to make it into a movie until I read the script and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I totally see it. I get how this is going to shake it up, I get how this is different from any other thing,’ and it got me really really excited. We’re still working on that one and ‘Joe’ has momentum right now. The audience has been great and they want another one, so we’re rushing to get that done and Dwayne has a certain time period so it may end up that ‘Joe’ goes first in all those things and I don’t know if ‘Masters of the Universe’ will wait for me or where that’s going to end up. But right now it’s been great. We’ve been designing a ton of stuff for ‘Masters of the Universe’ as a really beautiful, grounded, honest world – that’s the best way I can describe it. It’s everything you want ‘Masters of the Universe’ to be in terms of the fantasy but not in a way theatrical crazy way. It is actually a gorgeous world that we’re doing in the initial visual concepts that we’ve been making.”

Unfortunately there was no confirmation on Johnson’s return to G.I. JOE even though he was cited by Chu as the “leader” and “future” of the franchise.

As for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, right now it just sounds like a pipedream. They are working on it without knowing where the road will take them.

Are you waiting on this to get scraped, or are you actually waiting to see it?
