Descriptive details emerge from the CinemaCon trailer for The Predator

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Earlier this afternoon, Fox unveiled the first plot synopsis for Shane Black's THE PREDATOR. Then, during the studio's panel at CinemaCon 2018, members of the press were shown a trailer for the upcoming sci-fi action film. Our own Paul Shirey was there to soak it all in, and now I'm here to share those details with you, our fine readers.

As per a quick bit of reporting via our official Twitter account (and and email or two), we've learned several details with regard to what the first footage for Black's upcoming film brings to the legendary franchise.

“From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

Below you'll find a slightly more detailed description of the trailer:

The trailer opens on Jacob Tremblay at home, opening a cardboard box, and pulling out a Predator gauntlet. He opens the armor up, detaches a piece, and plays with it like a spaceship. As he does, it appears he is remotely controlling a real Predator ship and causes it to crash on Earth.

Next, we see Boyd Holbrook’s Quinn McKenna in an interrogation room, being grilled about a mission that caused the rest of his team to be “torn to pieces”. As the trailer continues, we see him in combat gear, approaching a downed Predator ship and picking up a nearby Predator mask.

Shortly thereafter, we see that Holbrook is the father of Tremblay’s character, Rory McKenna, whose mother is played by Yvonne Strahovski. Next, there's a series of fast cut scenes that include a shot of the Predator wielding a boomerang-like weapon (soaked with blood). Explosions, gunfire and other manners of mayhem follow as the Predator warns that he's back to ruin everyone's day.

The scene is then followed by Olivia Munn’s character, Casey Bracket (possibly a scientist of sorts), speaking about how the Predator is evolving after each visit to Earth. We see the Predator in her lab, throwing people and causing havoc, but we never get a full on, complete look at the iconic creature. Lots of teasing and mystery here. The trailer ends with Munn shooting a gun. As one of the guys asks where she learned to shoot, she replies, “America.”

With any luck, we'll be getting a look at this trailer ourselves, once the hype train for THE PREDATOR pulls out of the station. THE PREDATOR stars  Boyd Holbrook (RUN ALL NIGHT), Olivia Munn (THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE), Trevante Rhodes (MOONLIGHT, WESTWORLD), Keegan-Michael Key (KEANU, FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE), Thomas Jane (THE PUNISHER, THE MIST), Yvonne Strahovski (CHUCK), Alfie Allen (GAME OF THRONES), Sterling K. Brown (THIS IS US, ARMY WIVES), and Edward James Olmos (COCO, BLADE RUNNER). The highly-anticipated movie featuring one of sci-fi's greatest creatures will arrive in theaters on September 14th.
