The Purge TV series coming to USA and SyFy from Blumhouse Television

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

So this isn't the first time we've heard about THE PURGE TV show, but we now know it's finally getting produced and where it will air. It seems Blumhouse Television (now a completely independant company) will produce and distribute THE PURGE TV show, which will air on USA and SyFy, apparently simultaneously. Series creator James DeMonaco will continue to oversee the series, but it's unclear if he'll write or direct any of the episodes directly.

That's not to say that film franchise is finished, as DeMonaco has said before that he plans on writing and producing (though possibly not directing) a prequel that explains the circumstances that led to The Purge in the first place.

Honestly, I'm okay with this news. At first I felt it was yet another unnecessary movie-turned-to-show adaptation, and it still might be, but DeMonaco has talked about how "the one thing you really can't do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can't get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night. Whether it's revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are." So that could be an interesting take – making it less macro and subtextual, and bringing it back down to the personal.

But what do you Schmoes think? Do you think PURGE will be a HANNIBAL-esque success, or a MINORITY REPORT-type failure? Sound off below!

Meanwhile, no official release date for the show as of yet, but we'll keep you posted when it does.
