Movie Jail: Updates on Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage and Roland Emmerich!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we've decided it's time to take a look at a few of the actors and filmmakers from previous trials to see if you've changed your minds since we first put them up for Movie Jail. So without further ado…

The Defendants

Robert De Niro was found not guilty in July of 2012, and although he was nominated for an Oscar in 2013 for his performance in Silver Linings Playbook, he is still appearing in projects below his talents like Killing Season and The Bag Man. While Mr. De Niro's The Family, Last Vegas, and Grudge Match didn't receive great reviews from critics, most thought the actor did a solid job in all three films. Unfortunately, Mr. De Niro also starred in The Big Wedding, which bombed at the box office ($21 million) and with critics (7% at Rotten Tomatoes). Does the good still outweigh the bad when it comes to Mr. De Niro, or should we lock him up in Movie Jail?

Nicolas Cage hasn't appeared in that many films since his trial in August of 2012, but he did voice a character in The Croods, and garnered praise for his performance in Joe. He also starred in the surprisingly decent The Frozen Ground, however even Mr. Cage couldn't save Rage, an incredibly boring and generic film. Mr. Cage's next movie to be released will be the Left Behind reboot, which will likely be a fun film, but for all the wrong reasons. Do you believe Mr. Cage (and his one armed push ups) still doesn't deserve to go to prison, or should we reverse the verdict for the actor?

Roland Emmerich has only directed two movies since his trial in November of 2012, but neither film received fantastic reviews from critics. Mr. Emmerich went back to blowing shit up with White House Down after trying something different with Anonymous, however many of you thought Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen was the better movie about an attack on the White House in a Face-Off between the two films a couple of months ago. It was a close vote last time, so it'll be interesting to see if jury members still believe in Mr. Emmerich and his movies.

IN CLOSING…

Do you want to change the verdicts for Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage and director Roland Emmerich based on this new evidence, or do you believe they're still not guilty? Are you happy with their most recent work, or do you believe we should toss them in Movie Jail this time around?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Some jury members said they don't care for Gwyneth Paltrow as a person in last week's trial, but many believe she's a damn fine actress, so she's been found NOT GUILTY of all charges. Jury members praised Miss Paltrow for her chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man movies, and also said she's done plenty of solid work outside of the Marvel films to keep her out of Movie Jail.
