Weekend Box Office Report: December 8-10, 2017

Another win for Coco!

Pixar's COCO held the top spot at the box office for a third weekend, taking in an estimated $26.1 million!

Before everyone visits a galaxy far, far away next weekend, the animated Day of the Dead journey brought its domestic total to $135 million (passing the $123 million finish of Pixar's lowest-grossing release THE GOOD DINOSAUR) and a worldwide total of $389 million.

Costumed collaboration JUSTICE LEAGUE remained in second place with $9.5 million for a domestic total of $212 million on its fourth weekend in theaters (putting it a little more than halfway to the $412 million domestic finish of the summer's WONDER WOMAN). The gathering of DC Comics superheroes now has a worldwide total of $613 million.

WONDER continues to have traction in third with $8.4 million, pushing the Julia Roberts/Owen Wilson family drama over $100 million domestic (on a reported cost of $20 million).

In fourth place was James Franco's R-rated comedy-drama THE DISASTER ARTIST with $6.4 million after expanding to 840 screens.

Writer/producer/star Franco's $10 million chronicle of filmmaker Tommy Wiseau's infamously bad cult fave THE ROOM now has a domestic total of $8 million after its limited release debut last week.

Marvel's THOR: RAGNAROK was in fifth place with $6.2 million, cresting $300 million domestic on its sixth weekend of release. The Thunder God sequel from director Taika Waititi has a worldwide total of $833 million.

Comedy sequel DADDY'S HOME 2 was in sixth with $6 million, bringing the holiday comedy to $91.1 million domestic. In seventh was MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS with $5.1 million as the adaptation of Agatha Christie's locomotive mystery has arrived at a domestic total of $92.7 million and $274 million worldwide.

Animated Christmas tale THE STAR was in eighth with $3.6 million for a $32.2 million total, while writer-director Greta Gerwig's LADY BIRD shifted to ninth place with $3.5 million, giving the R-rated comedy-drama a domestic total of $21.3 million.

Opening down in tenth place was the new PG-13 comedy JUST GETTING STARTED with $3.1 million.

The senior squabble between Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman cost a reported $22 million. Critics didn't extend any holiday cheer to the latest from BULL DURHAM director Ron Shelton, giving it a comatose 9% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Outside the chart, the dark comedy THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI departed the list along with A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS. In limited release, Guillermo del Toro's creature romance THE SHAPE OF WATER expanded to 41 locations for a $1.1 million weekend, a solid per-screen average of $26k. Margot Robbie's portrayal of scandalous skater Tonya Harding in I, TONYA also left a mark with a $61k per-screen average.

Next weekend brings the dominating power of The Force to theaters with STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, while challengers include the animated bull FERDINAND and alien invasion sequel BEYOND SKYLINE.
