New A Simple Favor trailer gives you a glimpse at Paul Feig’s darker side

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Known for his high-grossing comedies like BRIDESMAIDS, THE HEAT, SPY and GHOSTBUSTERS, Paul Feig is not one you’d expect to tackle a dark mystery thriller filled with deception and murder. A SIMPLE FAVOR (an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Darcey Bell) acts as Feig’s departure from comedy, and the new trailer for the movie starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively teases a glimpse at his darker side with this unsettling whodunnit.

A Simple Favor centers on three small-town characters: a mom blogger (Anna Kendrick), her best friend (Blake Lively) who disappears suddenly and the latter's husband (Henry Golding). The story includes betrayals and reversals, a dead body and the revolving question of who is duping whom.

The new trailer doesn’t reveal anything new from what we saw in the first trailer, but the added design scheme (and new poser) calls to mind certain classic mystery movies like CHARADE (though that had comedic elements) and Hitchcock movies like VERTIGO and NORTH BY NORTHWEST. I really don’t know what to think about this movie, but clearly, Feig is trying to step away from his comfort zone and take inspiration from a different type of movie, so I hope he pulled off something unique.

A SIMPLE FAVOR arrives September 14.
