Tribeca Film Festival to hold a 25th anniversary screening of Goodfellas

There are few movies as universally loved as GOODFELLAS. Martin Scorsese‘s crime epic remains regularly at the top of every sort of best of list thanks in part to the stellar cast, screenplay, and direction. Personally, I prefer CASINO (check out my UnPopular Opinion), but I respect the love GOODFELLAS has earned. So, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the film, the Tribeca Film Festival will be screening the movie as their closing night film followed by a Q&A session moderated by Jon Stewart.

The list of those included in the Q&A was not disclosed, but I would assume Scorsese and Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro will be there. Scorsese issued a statement regarding the honor GOODFELLAS will receive.

was so excited to learn that this picture, now 25 years old, would be closing this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Excited and moved. It was an adventure to get it on screen—we wanted to make a movie that was true to Nick Pileggi’s book and to the life of Henry Hill and his friends, which means that we broke some rules and took some risks. So it’s heartening to know that GoodFellas has come to mean so much to so many people. It’s wonderful to see one of your pictures revived and re-seen, but to see it closing Tribeca, a festival of new movies, means the world to me.”

GOODFELLAS won six Academy Awards at the 1991 ceremony and has been a mainstay on home video ever since. The brand new Blu-ray edition will include a 36-page commemorative book as well as a new documentary titled Scorsese’s Goodfellas. You can pre-order the Blu-ray at Amazon.com. It will be released on April 7th.
