Fantasy noir series Carnival Row greenlit at Amazon

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW was one of the first scripts that made the Black List back in 2005, and has been in various states of development since then, with such directors as Tarsem Singh and Guillermo del Toro attached at various points. And it makes sense, as having read the script, it's a dark, neo-noir/steampunk fantasy film that was like nothing out there. So it's exciting to hear that it's now going to be a series on Amazon.

Here's the official synopsis:

Carnival Row is a fantasy-noir set in a steampunk neo-Victorian city. Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. We follow the investigation of a string of unsolved murders which are eating away at whatever uneasy peace still exists.

This is exciting news! With this and the upcoming urban fantasy BRIGHT, it seems that we're finally seeing new, darker, and more serious takes on fantasy tropes, as well as leaving the medieval setting. I think this will be refreshing for the genre, as it will allow it to tackle new ideas. And if it's anything like the original script, the issues of racism, immigration, terrorism, and other social issues will be addressed in an interesting and visually arresting way. My nerdy-ass can't wait!

Also I finally want to see something steampunk be successful. I mean, come on, it can't be that hard!

The show is currently planning on shooting Fall 2018, with a 2019 release slated.
